Next time you see Bob Pretty ask 'im wot happened to the prize hamper. He's done a good many things has Bob, but it'll be a long time afore Claybury men'll look over that. It was Henery Walker's idea.
It's after one o'clock, and it's Saturday, and the Bank's closed. What am I to do? 'I don't care what you do. Get somebody to cash it for you, I suppose. I've got to have the money. Here's all the bills made out, and in ten minutes the men'll be waiting. 'Well, said the man, I'll try. It ain't my fault, Johnny.
For pity's sake, sir, cut me loose as soon as you can, for these here lashin's have been drawed so tight that I've lost all feelin' in my hands and feet, while my arms and legs seems as though they was goin' to burst. What! haven't you got a knife about you, sir? I don't know what's become of mine, but some of the men'll be sure to have one, if you enquire among 'em."
They're to lay low a little while, and at two o'clock the blazin's to begin. Jim's run to Anderson's and Mead's, but we'll do just what Phil says. We'll get the boys together and you'll tell us what to do. The men'll kill Jim an' me if they find out we told, but we swore we'd stay by you boys. We'll help clear through, but don't tell on us. Don't never tell who told on 'em. Please don't."
"When Si holds up his hands," remarked Matilda, "they'll look like big hollyhock blossoms, and the men'll wonder where he got posies in Winter." Matilda contributed a red flannel shirt, upon which she had been engaged since the beginning of Winter reminded her that such a present would be very acceptable to Si. She had done a lot of her finest stitching upon it.
I'm thinkin', though, 'twon't be many years afore white men'll git in here, and then the Injuns and painters, and sich like'll, hev to leave it. Why, there's lots o' gold jest above here. I've known plenty of scouts that hev brung it in. The white folks'll git hold of it one of these days, and then the country'll fill up like Californy. "Yer see thet little mountain right ahead of us, don't yer?
"Y! Samuel Blount!" said the younger one, coming near and smiting him playfully on the elbow. "You stop!" Miss Letitia began laughing silently. They never laughed aloud. "If he didn't murder us," said Miss S'mantha, doubtfully. "Nonsense," said the trustee; "I'll answer for him." "Can't tell what men'll do," she persisted weakly.
"Maybe he won't come," says I. "You never can tell." "Curly," says he, "you can always tell! Listen to me. There's just one thing certain in the whole world or two. If a girl's handsome men'll come around. If she's rich men'll come around. They fall out of the sky. They come up out of the ground. They break in through the fence " "What's that?" says I. "Colonel, what do you mean about fences?"
Everybody was shouting his 'ardest, and the on'y quiet one there was Bob Pretty 'imself. "Poor Henery; he's gorn mad," he ses, shaking his 'ead. "You're a murderer," ses Ralph Thomson, shaking 'is fist at him. "Henery Walker's gorn mad," ses Bob agin. "Why, I ain't been near the place. There's a dozen men'll swear that I was at Wickham each time these misfortunate accidents 'appened."
Most of the men'll take the test without protest, but a few of them'll raise the roof about it. Nothing burns a moron worse than to have somebody question his fractional intelligence. The odds are that the ones that yell the loudest about taking the test will be the ones who get scrubbed out, and when the test shows that they're deficient, they won't believe it.
