A curious sound broke from Spence's throat. He stooped and sprang. But quick as he was, the figure on the rock was quicker. It slipped aside. Spence heard a guttural exclamation and caught a glimpse of a yellow face. "Li Ho!" The Chinaman pulled him firmly back from the edge of the moss-covered rock. "All same Li Ho," he said. "You come click but not too dam click." "I know. Where is he?"

Spence's service had produced too many contradictory impressions to be fitted into any definite pattern; and the chief lesson Millner had learned from them was that life was less of an exact science, and character a more incalculable element, than he had been taught in the schools.

Convinced that Spence's arrangement for his mother's safety was the best in the circumstances, Wallace left her, though somewhat reluctantly, in the care of the outlawed Covenanters, and resumed his journey with the shepherd after a few hours' rest.

Penny was kept under strict surveillance until her father was able to carry her off to a sister of his own in distant Lancashire, who could be depended upon to prevent any communication between the lovers. The Pikes poor people though absolutely innocent of any complicity, since they knew no more of what was going on than Stephen himself, were made to share in Spence's interdict.

I only thought you might have happened to read Mr. Spence's 'Sonnet to Alpha' in our last issue." I was obliged to admit that I had not; and feeling that it was as well to make a clean breast of my ignorance, I acknowledged that I had never heard of Mr. Spence. Miss Kingsley gave a little gasp, and looked amused. "Virginia! I am astonished," exclaimed Aunt Agnes.

But she was prepared to forgive New York a few sins in the matter of commercial slang: New York, which evidently dressed as it liked, and talked as it liked. But not knowing any more of a gilt-edged security than that it was something to Mr. Spence's taste, a retort was out of the question.

And his state the Honourable Dave remarked was in the very forefront of enlightenment in this respect: practically all that she demanded was that ladies in Mrs. Spence's predicament should become, pro tempore, her citizens. Married misery did not exist in the Honourable Dave's state, amongst her own bona fide citizens.

"You've got an idea here. Did you know it?" The inventor smiled. "Bob an' I kinder thought we had," returned he modestly. "Bob is helping you?" "Oh, I'm only putting in an oar," the young man hastened to say. "The plan was entirely Mr. Spence's. I am simply working out some of the details." "Bob knows a good deal more about boats than perhaps he'll own," Mr. Galbraith asserted to Willie.

It was the one thing which held interest for Bern's Spence now. Li Ho stepped gingerly to the edge of the rounded rock. In the clear light, Spence could see how the moss had been scraped from the margin. "Him down there," said Li Ho. "Moon-devil push 'um. Plenty stlong devil!" Li Ho shrugged. Spence's clenched hands relaxed. "Dead?" he asked dully. "Heap much dead," said Li Ho.

Our interviews were largely lachrymose on her part and morose on mine, after argument proved futile. She had none of Aunt Agnes's downrightness, but a no less degree of persistence. After many efforts, I succeeded in convincing her that my friends had no connection with the stage, and I persuaded her to accompany me to one of Mr. Spence's lectures.
