During the screeches which sounded more like the cries of an animal in an agony of pain even than before if it did not tilt itself first on one end, and then on another, I shall never be willing to trust the evidence of my own eyes again. And surely the box had increased in size; I could have sworn not only that it had increased, but that it was increasing, even as I stood there looking on.
He sat down on a Windsor chair, without a harp; he put his hands in his pockets, cleared his throat, looked up at the ceiling, and suddenly burst into a series of the shrillest falsetto screeches I ever heard in my life. My own private opinion is that he was suffering from hydrophobia.
Sometimes heaps and throngs of people would burst out of the alley, most of them women, making a dreadful clamour, mixed or compounded of screeches, cryings, and calling one another, that we could not conceive what to make of it. Almost all the dead part of the night the dead-cart stood at the end of that alley, for if it went in it could not well turn again, and could go in but a little way.
"He goes right up to 'er, and she ses, 'Are you 'e? and 'e ses, 'I am. Then ses she, 'Do you know what I'm a-goin' to tell you? an' 'e says, 'No. Then she ses, 'It's about 'er; and ses 'e, lookin' very white, ''Ow dare you 'ave 'er name on your vile lips? an' she gits up an' screeches, 'Turn that gal out, an' I'll tell you; an' 'e takes me by the arm, an' ses 'e, ''Ere git out, an' I gits out, an' that's all I knows."
As he neared the red glow, he saw that it was only a campfire dying down to coals. But from the darkness came such a clamoring of hisses, groans, and screeches that he could feel goose-pimples popping out on his arms. His rifle held a clamp for his flash. Making gun and light ready, he advanced cautiously, still unable to determine what was happening except that one hell of a fight was going on.
But even these could not account for the terrible din that seemed to fill the valley. Such unearthly yells and screeches the white men had never heard before. "What is it?" asked Captain Bax. "Has the whole village gone mad?" Mackay turned to one of his guides, and the man explained that the noise came from a village a little farther down the valley.
"Tuesday, November 15th. Cook left to-day. 'I've no fault to find with you, mum, she condescendingly explained to Delia. 'It's not you, nor the children, nor the food. It's the noises at night screeches outside my door, which sound like a cat, but which I know can't be a cat, as there is no cat in the house. This morning, mum, shortly after the clock struck two, things came to a climax.
The woman wheeled again and was off up the slope like a flash, where presently the king of birds was treated to the indignity of a sound boxing, which he resented with squawks and screeches, but not with talons, since under each foot he held the plump body of a fat chicken.
But this intelligent savage had to do with savages as clever as himself. The Apaches saw Coronado coming up on their rear, and they knew that they must make short work of the hunter, or must let him escape. While a score or so faced about to meet the Mexicans, a dozen charged with screeches and brandished lances upon the Texan.
I confess I devoutly wished it was morning. "Tuesday, October 12th. I was awakened at 11.30 p.m. by Delia saying to me, 'Oh, Edward, there have been such dreadful noises on the landing, just as if a cat were being worried to death by dogs. Hark! there it is again. And as she spoke, from apparently just outside the door, came a series of loud screeches, accompanied by savage growls and snarls.
