A mischievous smile brought the dimples to the Little Colonel's face as she began: "There's a girl in our school called Kitty, Evidently not from the city. With screeches and squawkin's She upset the nerves of poah old Hawkins. Oh, her behaviour was not at all pretty."

The wind now rose, and the dismal sighing of the trees speedily grew into a series of the most perturbing screeches, as the branches and trunks swayed to and fro like reeds before the violence of the hurricane.

Ten paces away three women and a man were brawling, the low angry tones of his voice mingling with the screeches of their Billingsgate. Muffled figures were passing and repassing unconcernedly, some entering the houses, others coming out, and a handsome coach, without arms and with a footman in plain livery, lumbered along and stopped farther on.

Vague noises are at all times audible in jail stirrings, foot-falls, a subdued voice now and then, the sharp orders of an official "bawlings out" as they are termed; the clanging of steel gates, the murmur of machinery, the cacophany of musical instruments during practise hours in the chapel; as well as the periodical screeches and ringings of whistles and gongs.

'Where is he, Sandy? I screeches; and then, 'Don't say the word, Sandy, don't you say it. But, Lor' bless ye, sir, it didn't much matter what he said nor what he didn't, for I knowed all, an' down I flops on the deck in a dead faint.

The savage shouts of the assailants, the despairing screeches of women and children, who have come forth only to find all escape cut off, the gasping groans of the wounded and of the slain, the gaping gashes and staggering forms, and ever around, grim, demon-like countenances, with teeth bared and a perfect hell of blood-fury gleaming from distended eyeballs.

But now, now when all was dark, pitch dark and hushed, and she, for aught she knew to the contrary, the only one, in that great rambling building, awake, she reviewed again and again, in her mind, that rushing up the stairs. The wind! It could not have been the wind. The wind shuts doors, and rattles windows, and moans, and sighs, and howls and screeches, but it does not walk the house in boots.

Already the shanty is packed, and judging from the thundering screeches and clapping of hands, the entertainment is such as suits the depraved tastes of the ruffianly "bums" who have paid their "four bits," and gone in. But look! Madly out of Deadwood gulch, the abode of thousands of lurking shadows, dashes a horseman.

"She put her hands on her hips, looked at me, and laughed to herself, and then she said: "'Yes, Johnny, you can go. But be sure and take a club with you. I think you'll be a great help." Just as Martin had finished his story we heard a series of the most terrific screeches and caterwauls. "Heavens and earth, man," said Hector, "what's that? That must be the father of all cats."
