The Garnetts' house stood at the corner of Sandon Terrace, and possessed at once the advantages and drawbacks of its position. The advantages were represented by three bay windows, belonging severally to the drawing-room, mother's bedroom, and the play-room on the third floor.

And a goodly heap of gingerbread chunks travelled upstairs to the play-room, the door of which was unlocked. It was over this welcome interruption that a wonderful new game was hatched.

And so, besides the nursery where our toys and books were kept and where our soberer hours were passed, there was given up to our use at the top of the house a large attic, which was called our play-room. It is quite desirable for children to run wild at times, it is good for them to shout, to scream, to jump, to ramp good for girls as well as boys.
They used to go hunting with Hugh, their older brother, when he would let them go, and after the cows with Peter and Cole. Old Balla, the driver, was their boon comrade and adviser, and taught them to make whips, and traps for hares and birds, as he had taught them to ride and to cobble shoes. His room over "the old kitchen" was the boys' play-room when he would permit them to come in.
"Don't care for nasty old uncle," piped Toddie's voice. I laid down my book with a sigh, and went into the garden. Mike saw me and shouted: "Misther Burthon, will ye look dhere? Did ye's ever see the loike av dhat bye?" Looking up at the play-room window, a long, narrow sort of loop-hole in a Gothic gable, I beheld my youngest nephew standing upright on the sill. "Toddie, go in quick!"
But there is a lower set, those who lounge about the streets at night, and take to gambling and betting. For these boys the children's play-room is opened in the evening; here they read, talk, box, and play bagstelle, draughts, and dominoes, These lads are as rough as can be found, yet on the whole they give very little trouble.
