I told Miss Remson the morning we were in her office that I intended to find out all I could about Doctor Matthews' secretary. I have not found out anything much about her except that she is not a student. But I have seen her. Kathie knows her by sight. She pointed her out to me one afternoon. We passed her on the campus. She was going toward Doctor Matthews' house. I did not like her looks.
"Kathie, give me a kiss before you go," he whispered, hoarsely. "I I don't often bother you." She drew her breath in deeply as he put his arms clumsily about her; but she stood still, and he kissed her on the forehead, and touched the little wavy curls that strayed across it gently with his big, trembling fingers. When he released her, she moved at once impetuously to the open doorway.
"Kathie, darling," he said, clasping her hands tenderly, "I do understand, and, thank God, I believe I am able to reciprocate your love with one as chastened and pure. When I left The Pines last fall I did so because I could not any longer endure to be near you, loving you as I did.
"Almost a year," gulped the little man, looking up through streaming eyes. "Her mother died when Kathie was about a year old. The father never saw his child. He had deceived the woman. He cast her off and married another, I take it, although I am a bit hazy. I was so upset that I I scarcely remember what the man said. Now the the father wants to find his child.
"All wrong thought brings the sting the smart of the lash; but love right thinking brings the 'peace of God," said Katherine. "Ah! it is a case of 'as ye sow ye shall also reap," said Miss Reynolds, drawing a long breath. "But, Kathie, do you think it will be possible for me to so reverse my thought about that man that I can grow to love him?"
"Why, Kathie, I think you ought to have written to him." "I meant to write and own up, no matter if I did tell you I wouldn't. But I kept putting it off. Esmé, did you notice how thin and worn he looks?" The other winced. "He's had a great deal to worry him." "Well, he hasn't got our lawsuit to worry him any more. That's off." "Off?" A light flashed into Esmé's face. "Your father has dropped it?"
It will be good to feel there is one amid all the crowd who knows." "He knows also, Kathie," Darrell replied, in low tones, indicating Mr. Britton with a slight motion of his head. "Does he know all?" she asked, quickly. "Yes; I thought you could have no objection." "No," she answered, after a brief pause; "I am glad that it is so." There was no opportunity for further speech, as Mr.
I'm not excluding other possibilities, but I'll work on that line until and unless I find out differently. Five thousand should cover both jobs." "You think that's how it is?" Kathie asked. "Look, Kathie. I got just as far in Arithmetic, at school, as you did, and I suspect that Mrs. Fleming got at least as far as long division, herself.
Very graceful the little dancing-teacher looked, tip-toeing here, gliding there, twinkling through a series of pretty steps down the long garden walk. But the pupils! Do the best she might, sturdy little Kathie couldn't manage her dress. She grasped it tightly in either fat little fist. "Mother Bunch!" Lu giggled behind her back. Kathie's face got very red over that.
"You've nothing to worry about, there." "How can you know?" "From Kathie." "Did her father tell her?" "She told her father. There's a dreadful quarrel." "I don't understand at all." "Kathie absolutely refuses to testify for her father. She says that the accident was her own fault, and if there's a trial she will tell the truth." Before she had finished, Hal was on his feet.
