"Are you afraid to take hold of it?" her teacher inquired, as she observed her hesitation. "No, I am not afraid, for I know that God is supreme and never fails those who put their trust in Him," was the confident response. "But," Katherine continued, "are you sure you really want Christian Science treatment?" "Very sure, Kathie."
"All the week I've been looking forward to seeing this man any man, any one to take off the edge of this." She shuddered. Even in thought she hesitated to analyse the feeling that possessed her. "Well, he's here, and I think I feel worse." Her eyes travelled toward the hills she had been used to watch at this hour, and rested on them with a vague, unseeing gaze. "Tired Kathie?
"Very respectfully yours, JOHN F. HOWARD." As she finished reading this letter Katherine looked into the eyes of her teacher and smiled. "Kathie, I can hardly believe it!" said Miss Reynolds, in a voice choked with tears. "'The measure that ye mete shall be measured to you again, you know," softly returned her companion, "and love begets love.
That was enough; in that one glance the memory of his love returned to him like an overwhelming flood. She was no longer his Dream-Love, but a splendid, living reality, only more beautiful than his dreams or his imagination had portrayed her. He stretched out his arms towards her with the one word, "Kathie!"
How do we know that she is keen about Kathie? She never has been. As a matter of fact, she brags about her hatred for children. Openly says she despises 'em. Prefers her dogs and cats, and all such rubbish as that. No, sir, Mary; I don't pack Kathie off with a strange Frenchwoman, destined for heaven knows what, and that's all there is to it. The thing looks fishy to me.
And as she laughed a naughty laugh, and as Kathie glared back at her, then it was that that which happened began to happen.
She was leaning forward against the table, her needle, with a long end of yellow silk drawn half-way through her work, held in her upraised hand, her whole attitude one of quivering excitement and expectancy. The man took his pipe from his mouth deliberately, with a look of slow wonder. "Why, Kathie, you seem quite anxious. I didn't know you'd be so interested, my dear.
I asked you when that day would be; do you remember your answer?" "I do." He continued, in impassioned tones: "Are not the conditions fulfilled, sweetheart? My love for you then was as a dream, a myth, compared with that I bring you to-day, and looking in your eyes I need no words to tell me that your love has broadened and deepened with the years. Kathie, is not this 'the time appointed'?"
"But I want to do it," laughed Margaret. "Don't you want me?" "Want you! That isn't the question, dear," objected Mrs. Whitmore gently. "Of course, a maid's service can't be compared for an instant with a daughter's love and care; but I don't want to be selfish and you and Kathie never let Betty do a thing for me. There, there! I won't scold any more. What are you going to do to-day, Meg?"
"Jesus said, 'All things whatsoever ye ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive. You are not quite like the woman who prayed for what she was sure she would not get; but you are 'amazed' because you have received that for which we asked; which shows that you did not really expect it." "But I must have had some faith, Kathie, or I would not have trusted myself to your treatment."
