He had very extensive property, and the more level parts of it were certainly valuable, consisting of 200 journaux of good arable land: the forests through which we walked were his, and he possessed three montagnes and châlets higher up on the mountain. The glacière was his own property; and two years ago he had discovered another in the neighbourhood, which he had not since visited.

However, Girardin was the first to recognise the great writer's talents, and at the end of 1829, or the beginning of 1830, after having inserted an article by Balzac in La Mode, of which he was editor, he invited his collaboration, as well as that of Victor Varaigne, Hippolyte Auger, and Bois le Comte, in forming a bibliographical supplement to the daily papers, which was to be entitled "Le feuilleton des journaux politiques."

"Excuse me, gentlemen," he said, as he took a place opposite them, and began reading the papers of the day. "Bah!" said he, at last, "sont-ils grands ces journaux Anglais? Look, sir," he said, handing over an immense sheet of The Times to Mr. Gambouge, "was ever anything so monstrous?" Gambouge smiled politely, and examined the proffered page. "It is enormous" he said; "but I do not read English."

His mother thinks it very creditable to his abilities; though, being unacquainted with the French language, her judgment cannot be considered final. Ce rat ci est un animal fort singulier. Il a deux pattes de derriere sur lesquelles il marche, et deux pattes de devant dont il fait usage pour tenir les journaux.

Gifted with the sort of mind which we must call a reflector, he appropriated the sallies of others, the wit of the stage and the petits journaux, by his method of repeating them, and applied them as formulas of criticism. This system Arthur pursued in all things; he owed to nature the convenient genius of imitation without mimicry; he imitated seriously.

"What we must hope for is a liberty that may have full power for good, but not for evil." Avec une Introduction Historique sur les Origines du Journal et la Bibliographie Générale des Journaux, depuis leur Origine. Par Eugène Hatin.

The period of the elections was the signal for a still more obstinate attack from the public press. The papers were insufficient: men sold pamphlets in the streets, and the "Journaux affiches" were invented, which were placarded against the walls of Paris, and around which groups of people were constantly collected.

Les journaux and politics in general are topics upon which Afrique can say more, without the slightest fatigue, than a book as big as my two thumbs.

In 1789, the only daily papers in circulation here were the Journal de Paris and the Petites Affiches; for the Gazette de France appeared only twice a week. From that period, these ephemeral productions increased so rapidly, that, under the generic name of Journaux, upwards of six thousand, bearing different titles, have appeared in France, five hundred of which were published in Paris.

Le Clerc, sur les journaux chez les Romains, from which this notice is taken. As long as the drama was cultivated poetry had not ceased to be popular in its tone. But we have already mentioned that coincidentally with the rise of Sulla dramatic productiveness ceased. Comedy, as hitherto practised, was almost equally mute.
