Rick's finger traced a line on the recording drum. "I'm kind of glad myself," he admitted. JANIG Closes In Steve Ames walked around the objects on the laboratory table. "Nothing deadly looking about these gadgets," he said. "Which goes to show how misleading appearances can be."

"Joe and Chuck will approach from upriver and go around the mansion fence by wading downstream. They'll stay under cover somewhere at the edge of the mansion grounds until they hear my signal on the radio to close in or until they see the balloon launched. I'll go in the way I did before." The two JANIG agents nodded, and bent over the chart borrowed from the houseboat.

All is well. JANIG has the island covered like a blanket. The project team is going full speed ahead. We're having fun. Jan is just the companion Barby needs. All's right with the world. He turned over on his stomach and bunched his pillow up more comfortably. Then why, he asked himself, did he still feel funny? Scotty came in from the shower, toweling vigorously. "What's eating you?" he demanded.

They took both of the island boats, planning to leave one for Duke and Jerry to use later in the day. Then, after tying up the boats at the main pier and getting the car, they called first on Captain Douglas of the State Police. The officer knew the boys well, and knew in addition of their connection with JANIG. He promised readily to assist.

I'll work it out with Joe Blake. We could keep watch by day, when possibility of contact is greatest because the barbershop is open. The JANIG team on the mainland can keep watch by night, because if the houseboaters and the barber meet at night it will have to be in the woods. Anywhere in town would be too obvious except for the barbershop."

The clerk checked their forms, then nodded. "Okay. We can use both of you, if you pass the security check. Ever been cleared?" "We're both cleared for top secret," Rick told him. "What agency?" The clerk glanced up but made no comment. Rick guessed that JANIG clearances were not common.

Rick breathed his relief. Evidently Steve didn't mind being called by name. The boys knew Steve as Spindrift's contact with JANIG, the Joint Army-Navy Intelligence Group for which Spindrift had worked in the past, once to solve The Whispering Box Mystery, and again to track down the secret of The Caves of Fear. "Wonder what he's doing here?" Scotty muttered. "We'll soon find out," Rick said.

"By the time you wake up, I'll have a lot more than guesses, and I'll give you the details then." Crowd at Martins Creek Rick and Scotty awoke to find four newcomers at Steve's house. Steve introduced them to Dave Cobb, electronics specialist; Joe Vitalli and Chuck Howard, JANIG agents; and Roy McDevitt from Wallops Island.

Ask Steve Ames." The boys stared in amazement. Steve Ames was a close friend, and their contact in JANIG, one of the top American government security organizations. "How do you know Steve?" Rick asked in astonishment. "He and I went through the FBI Academy together. We keep in touch. Also, the International Police Organization, which is called Interpol, keeps us up to date on developments.

He won't be home until tonight, and the picture wouldn't reach JANIG until tomorrow. Then it would take a day to check it out." "Are we in a hurry?" Scotty asked. Rick chuckled. "I am. But don't ask me why. Look, I'll bet Duke or Jerry could identify it by going through the newspaper morgue." Their newspaper friends were owner-editor and reporter for the Whiteside paper back home.
