The response was quick. The stranger held out his hand. "I'm Roger Bennett from the Atomic Energy Commission. You're the boys who notified JANIG about the cement bags." Rick and Scotty identified themselves, and Bennett nodded. "I know John Gordon of the Spindrift staff. We worked together on a test project a few years ago. Now, what's the story?"
Otherwise why the call on you last night? And the questions?" Steve paused while the waiter served them. "The conclusion is this: Something they value was in the water near where you swam. You met me yesterday morning, and they had already identified me. Which means that they must have agents in Washington who warned them JANIG was moving in on the case.
But Jerry Webster, Rick's friend and newspaper reporter, hadn't known when he wrote the story that the Scout leaders carried an astonishing amount of armament for such a peaceful expedition. The JANIG agents, however, had been chosen for the assignment because they really were Scout leaders in their home communities. The story would stand investigation.
I handed the pilot the pictures you took and told him what to do with them, then I made another call to my office in Washington to tell them the pictures were on the way and to look them over and take action accordingly. We'll be seeing the results pretty soon." The young agent stopped smiling. "Your little mystery has turned into a case for JANIG, kids.
We really should have the damage to your suit repaired." The man's dark complexion was turning a grayish pink with rage. Rick estimated quickly. If he knew Steve Ames, the JANIG agent was long gone, and the tail would not catch up with him again. They had delayed the shadow for perhaps two minutes, but for Steve that would be enough. Rick stepped aside. "Very well. If you insist " "I do."
But if Jan is recognized by any of the enemy..." "Steve isn't even sure there is an enemy," Barby pointed out swiftly. "How can you be so sure?" Rick didn't answer. He turned and went into the house, the others at his heels. In the library, he consulted the schedule Steve had given them, so they would know where to reach him at any time. The agent was at JANIG headquarters in Washington today.
He looked up at Rick, his eyes dull and malevolent, but he said nothing. "What happened?" Rick asked. Joe Vitalli stood behind Camillion and company, his riot gun ready. The JANIG agent was wet up to his armpits. Chuck Howard came into sight from behind Rick, and he carried an open first-aid kit. "You jumped for the balloon," Steve reminded him. He motioned to the bodyguard.
Have him pack a bag, then deliver him to the New York JANIG office. We'll take it from there. Got it?" Rick had it. "How do I make sure we're not followed?" Steve paused. "That's a tough one. Air travel would be surest. Do you have any landing lights on Spindrift?" "No. Besides, it's a short runway, and only a pilot who knew the island could possibly land at night."
In many of the cases, the scientific staff worked under the direction of a topnotch intelligence agent by the name of Steven Ames. Rick and Scotty had taken an active part, in spite of the fact that they were only in their teens. Working for JANIG, the intelligence group that Steve Ames represented, had taught both boys a great deal about intelligence procedures.
This wasn't a matter for the agency officially, but Rick was sure Steve Ames, their contact in JANIG, would help if he could. Since Spindrift had first worked with the agency on The Whispering Box Mystery, Steve and the boys had become good friends. Rick suggested to the others that Steve should be called. All of them knew the young agent.
