Half dreaming, half awake, he saw the familiar door slowly open and, like the timely hero in a melodrama, his own figure appear before the stricken and astonished company. His eyes opened half-fearfully, and glanced up in the morning twilight. Their perplexity gave place to a quiet, almost vacant smile; the lids slowly closed again, and at last the lean hands twitched awhile in sleep.

And groping out of the radiance, pausing at the verge of the dais, leaping down from it, came Larry, laughing, filled with life, blinking as one who draws from darkness into sunshine. He saw Lakla, sprang to her, gripped her in his arms. "Lakla!" he cried. "Mavourneen!" She slipped from his embrace, blushing, glancing at the Three shyly, half-fearfully.

Crossing to the row of pegs she drew on her parka and heavy mittens, and tiptoeing to the outer door, passed out into the night, crossed the moonlit clearing, and stepped half-fearfully into the deep shadow of the forest to the call of the beckoning arms.

She listened half-fearfully for a moment before she opened the door, dreading to hear the dear memory of her mother still under discussion, but Grandmother and Aunt Matilda were wrangling happily over the hair-wreath in the parlour.

But the man appeared not to hear; he was still on his knees. Tim faced the woods once more. He was about to mount his horse when he heard a step behind him. He turned sharply and faced Laura. "I couldn't rest. I came out this morning. I've seen everything," she said. "You didn't trust me," he said heavily. "I never did anything else," she answered. He gazed half-fearfully into her eyes.

It was Monte Irvin. As Irvin seized her hands and looked at her eagerly, half-fearfully, Rita achieved sufficient composure to speak. "Oh, Mr. Irvin," she said, and found that her voice was not entirely normal, "what must you think " He continued to hold her hands, and: "I think you are very indiscreet to be out alone at three o'clock in the morning," he answered gently.

"Is Heaven kind at last?" and then he curiously and cautiously opened the bread that, sure enough, yielded up the secreted appliances for effecting his escape. In astonishment, even terror, Emile held these unlawful little contrivances in his hand for a time, eyeing them curiously, and then half-fearfully tucked them away in his bosom.

"There's something in your contention, John," he said, "but I'm acting for my client remember, and he has his ideas of right and wrong, too. He's paying for the place." The young teacher's face fell, and old Sandy McLachlan, who had been watching him with eyes pitifully anxious, came a step nearer. "They will not be turning me off?" he asked, half-fearfully, half-defiantly.

"Perhaps because of what happened, Goodwin, my friend," he answered his eyes again full of malice; "and there will be others friends of Yolara friends of Lugur and perhaps another" his voice was almost inaudible "one whom they have not called " He halted, half-fearfully, glancing at the globe; put finger to lips and spread himself out upon one of the couches.

This is what they say," finished the boy, whipping his violin from its case, and, after a swift testing of the strings, plunging into a weird, haunting little melody. In the doorway, Mrs. Holly, bewildered, yet bewitched, stood motionless, her eyes half-fearfully, half-longingly fixed on David's glorified face.
