My appeal to a passer-by for guidance caused him to sink into long cogitation. "When you come to a crossroad, turn right and keep going," he finally pronounced oracularly. Obeying the directions, I wended my way alongside the banks of a canal. Darkness fell; the outskirts of the jungle village were alive with winking fireflies and the howls of near-by jackals.
The two friends were getting near the end of their dinner. Through the cafe windows they could see the Boulevard, crowded with people. They could feel the gentle breezes which are wafted over Paris on warm summer evenings and make you feel like going out somewhere, you care not where, under the trees, and make you dream of moonlit rivers, of fireflies and of larks.
There had been so much rain that it was heavy wading through the padi, and it was quite dark when we reached the jungle, in which the rain had made the footing very precarious, and in darkness we forded the swollen stream, and stumbled along the shore of the Perak, where fireflies in thousands were flashing among the bushes a beautiful sight.
The fireflies, too, which sparkled most vividly in the darkest places, now and then startled him, as one of uncommon brightness would stream across his path; and if, by chance, a huge blockhead of a beetle came winging his blundering flight against him, the poor varlet was ready to give up the ghost, with the idea that he was struck with a witch's token.
And there, many a time, in the evening, after a day spent in teaching the natives how to plant their fields and build their houses, he would gather them round him in the twilight, and, while the cool wind wandered over his hair and brow, and shook overhead the graceful plumes of the cocoa-palm, he would talk to them in low sweet tones, until the fireflies were twinkling in the thicket and the stars stole out one after another in their silent myriads, of One Who came from the highest Heaven to redeem them from savagery and degradation, and to make them holy as He was holy, and pure as He was pure.
Cecily continued to be absorbed in the row of lights gleaming like fireflies beyond the Park. "Cecily," he began, and let his mind return to an earlier train of thought. "Supposing that I that you were going for a walk with me." "We'll suppose it," said Cecily. "I've an idea it has happened before. But we'll suppose it actually happened again."
At last a shot fired by the gunner did the job; it struck her foremast, which shortly afterwards went by the board. The Fireflies gave three cheers at the good fortune. "She's done for, sir," said Cross. "Now for the brig we must try what metal she carries." "Stop a bit," said I, "Cross; we must give the schooner a little more before she gets away.
It was then short of two o'clock, and while busy trailers followed on with their lanterns down the eastward bank, and were presently seen flitting like fireflies far south among the willows, Turner himself, with a score of his men, hastened back to quarters. There was saddling in hot haste, yet with the precision of long practice.
Beneath her window the fireflies were lighting their lamps, and living their little lives. She could hear the swallows crooning in their nests beneath the eaves. "He made them; He cares for them; He will care for me," she said to herself. The night air cooled her brow, a holy peace and calm came to her troubled heart.
Wealth, he could see, was the answer. With money, everything was attainable: books, leisure for study, travel, prestige in short, command over the physical details of life. He would go in for Big Business. Already he thrilled with a sense of power and prosperity. The little house stood silent in the darkness as he went down the path. The night was netted with the weaving sparkle of fireflies.
