Only from the distance came the echo of the song, the rasp of the forced merriment, the clatter of the geta, and the hum of the crowd. Starlight revealed the landscape. The moon was rising through a cloud's liquescence. Soon the hundreds of rice-plots would catch her full reflection.

By-and-by, as a waft of wind lifted the cloud's ragged edge, his eyes sought the long slopes below, and then went up to a mass of dark granite topping the white cumulus above, and frowning over it out of the blue. "Better get down here," he said. Roger rode on unheeding. "Better get down here, master," he repeated in a wheedling voice, and, dismounting, took Roger's rein.

The hatches were put on, and, with the exception of the after-hatch, battened down that evening; and, whilst this was being done, Captain Blyth made his appearance on board, accompanied by a friend, a certain Captain Spence, who had been invited to take a farewell glass of wine in the Flying Cloud's saloon.

Forts had been planned in Chief Red Cloud's Powder River country of Wyoming, and miners were entering the Sioux and Northern Cheyennes' hunting reserve of the famous Black Hills of South Dakota. Another railroad, the Northern Pacific, was about to cross the northern buffalo range. On their reservations in South Dakota the Sioux and Cheyennes were getting restless.

"The white soldiers had a great medicine. We were burned by fire." And all the Indians of the plains, hearing about the mystery, when the breech-loading rifles mowed down the Sioux and the Cheyennes, spoke of the bad god fight that defeated Chief Red Cloud. The Sioux reported that they had lost eleven hundred and thirty-five warriors. Red Cloud's nephew was sorely wounded in the charge.

Every dome, and brow, and swelling boss touched by her white rays, glows as if lighted with snow. I am now only a mile from last night's camp; and have been climbing and sketching all day in this difficult but instructive gorge. It is formed in the bottom of the main canyon, among the roots of Cloud's Rest.

And from the cloud's centre he was constantly boasting of his awful power, and scaring people into butchering lambs and things in his honour. Yet, doubtless, that heathen tribe found its god 'good, and other people formed the habit of calling him good, without thinking much about it.

Without giving himself time for due reflection, he ran up on deck and approached the skipper. "Golden Cloud's in the paper as overdue, sir," he said, respectfully. "What is?" enquired Fraser, sharply. "Golden Cloud, sir; boat Cap'in Flower is on," said Joe, slowly. Fraser regarded him sternly. "What do you know about it?" he asked. Joe looked round helplessly.

Jinks, whose drawn sword was in his hand. "Back! rash youth!" cried Jinks, with terrible emphasis, "or this sword shall split thy carcass back!" And the speaker flashed the sword so near to Cloud's eyes that he tossed up his head and nearly reared. Verty had been gazing at the sky, and was scarcely conscious of Mr. Jinks' presence; but the movement made by Cloud aroused him.

Then suddenly the door opened, and there stood Ellen Robinson, disapproval and hauteur written in every line of her unpleasant face! One could hardly imagine how those two, Julia and Ellen, could possibly be sisters. Dismay filled Julia Cloud's heart for an instant, and brought a pallor to her cheek. How had she forgotten Ellen? What a fool she had been to tell Ellen to come early in the morning!
