Randolph were really over. That report could not be entrusted to paper. She wished that her windows were on the front. She might go into Mrs. Albright's room no, she had better remain at home, somebody might come. She took a book and sat down in the easiest chair; but her thoughts were not on the printed page. She slammed it back in its place with a mutter of scorn scorn for herself.
Carteret had begun to pound impatiently upon the door, when it was cautiously opened by Miss Pemberton, who was pale, and trembled with excitement. "Where is Olivia?" asked the major. "She is upstairs, with Dodie and Mrs. Albright's hospital nurse. Dodie has the croup. Virgie ran away after the riot broke out. Sister Olivia had sent for Mammy Jane, but she did not come. Mrs.
"Look at this and tell me if you wonder that I did not answer it," said Uncle John bringing out the card Austin had written him from Captain Albright's home three weeks before. To Austin's surprize it was unsigned. "How was I to know who wrote this?" asked his uncle with twinkling eyes, "you will have to sign your name if you want money from me."
After he had gone, my father called me to him, and told me that the squire was going to start a store in the village, and wanted a boy to help, and that I could go if I wished. I went, and remained in the village store until it became a city store. People say that I got my start in life when I entered Albright's store, but I will always declare that I got it while I was waiting for the grist.
I little thought how soon my courage would be tested. Just after dinner I got my grist, and started for home. When I arrived at Squire Albright's gate, where I turned off to go home, I found the old squire waiting for me. I saw in a moment that something had gone wrong.
Carteret, wearing a worried and haggard look, met him at the threshold of the nursery. "Dodie is ill," she said. "At three o'clock, when the trouble began, I was over at Mrs. Albright's, I had left Virgie with the baby. When I came back, she and all the other servants had gone. They had heard that the white people were going to kill all the negroes, and fled to seek safety.
She sprang to the door. "What in the world " Miss Sterling motioned for silence, and they hurried to the further side of the room. "I knew you'd be frantic," she began; "but I couldn't help it. Just before I reached Mrs. Adlerfeld's room I heard Mrs. Nobbs's voice in there, so I stopped at Mrs. Albright's. I knew it would be all right to tell her, they are so intimate. She is pleased as we are.
Temple looked at his watch. "Time enough?" inquired the president. "Plenty." Mr. Randolph approached the superintendent who was busying herself at her desk. In a moment he returned. "Mrs. Nobbs will go up with you," he said. Juanita Sterling did not wait; she hastened upstairs to insure Mrs. Albright's safe exit from the corner room. The door was left partly open as Mrs.
But he could not understand why an answer to his letter should not come. Three weeks passed since he first came into Captain Albright's home, yet his uncle did not send him money nor acknowledge his letter. One day a telegram came to him saying a ticket was at the office for him, and the message was signed by his uncle.
And I am almost gladdest of this, each lady has five dollars a month for spending money! They are expected to buy their own shoes and stockings and gloves and neckwear and hats; but they'll have plenty left for themselves. Mrs. Albright's birthday comes next week, and we are planning a big time. But the cream of the birthdays comes next summer, when we expect to celebrate June Holiday's birthday.
