As Dorothy and Tavia came into the schoolyard they saw Sarah Ford on the swing, that hung from a heavy square frame. Down went Tavia's books on the grass. "First for a run under!" she called, and instantly a line of girls formed, while Tavia led, of course, with such a "run under" that Sarah tried to jump to save herself from another like it.
"I have lost a friend," went on Morrison, in a rambling way, "and until she is found I do not leave these woods." Tavia's heart stood still. Would the men find them? "Oh," sighed the girl with the injured foot, "I will throw myself into the creek before I will go back to the " "Hush! They have got him!" Two strong men had taken hold of Morrison.
White passed into the hall," won't you come here a moment? I have a very interesting thing to tell you," and as Mrs. White stepped back to the door again, Dorothy snatched the hat from Tavia's head. Instantly the "installment" hair fell to the waist on one side, and clung to Tavia's neck at the other. "Why!" exclaimed the aunt. "What on earth has happened to the child's locks?"
There certainly did seem many things to do, but here was plainly an emergency case. If she could manage to go to the city, obtain Miss Dearing's address from the store, go to see her, and then stop at Dalton on her way back " "I ought to be able to do that," she told herself. "And it would be such a joy to take away all Tavia's worry before Christmas Day."
And it's Tavia's turn to cook supper!" Tavia sprang up and darted down the path. Nat followed. "She hasn't learned to work yet," commented Cologne. She never knew a thing about how Tavia darned the station master's socks. Camp Dorothy had been closed tight all day. As tea-time struck, the maid threw up the big flap. "Surprise! Surprise!" she called, and such a feast as was spread!
"It must be late?" asked Dorothy. "Not so very," answered Tavia evasively. "Good-night," called Dorothy. "Good-night," replied Tavia. But Tavia's head did not ache. She "tumbled in" as she promised, but did not immediately try to sleep. She was, instead, trying to arrange some things clearly before her much-confused faculties trying to decide what she should write home.
White had hurried off to fetch warm drinks for Tavia. "You'll have to get up a 'visitor alarm, I guess, Nat," said Joe, noting Tavia's plight and Nat's embarrassment. "If we had heard the dump-cart on the drive we would not have kept her so long out in the cold." "That's right," answered Nat; "we will surely have to rig up something to send signals from the gate."
No wonder Tavia could not be found within or without the precincts of the camp. Dorothy had always loved her cousins, Ned and Nat, but when they arrived at the camp, the day after Tavia's disappearance, she fancied she had never before fully appreciated them.
Tavia's happiness was so entirely self-evident there was no need for her to make formal expression of it to Dorothy, yet, as she had promised herself to be "just like other girls" Tavia felt the obligation to say something polite. "I know, Dorothy," she began, "we owe everything to you. But it has really made a new world for us, and now, you will see how we appreciate it.
"No wonder Tavia wants help," thought Dorothy, as she hurried to get her own things safely put in the box that stood ready. "I declare, she has the queerest taste if such things are included in the taste faculty." A shuffle and hum at the portal indicated the arrival of Tavia's guests.
