'The Sidier Dhu? the black soldier; that is what they call the independent companies that were raised to keep peace and law in the Highlands. Vich Ian Vohr commanded one of them for five years, and I was sergeant mysell, I shall warrant ye. They call them Sidier Dhu because they wear the tartans, as they call your men King George's men Sidier Roy, or red soldiers.
It is not her ladyship's fault that she fancies herself better than you and me. The skirts of her ancestors' garments have been kissed for centuries; it is a thousand years, they say, since the tartans of the head of the family were embraced by the defunct Duncan's lords and councillors, when the great ancestor of the House became King of Scotland.
"Why for no?" enquired Hec, in surprise. "It's the Highlanders themselves that love a bonny fighter." Down the road, between lines of silent men, came the pipers with waving kilts and flying tartans, swinging along in their long swaying stride, young Angus doing wonders on the big drum, with his whirling sticks, and every piper blowing his loudest, and marching his proudest.
'It's a sore travail, and round a few black tartans I see many men in grey, pressing them hard; ochone, ochone. "'It 's time to pray, I said, and there wass a man in the clachan that wass mighty in prayer, and we gathered into his kitchen, four and twenty women and four men, and every one had a kinsman in the field.
So fetch me tartans, heather, scones, An' dye my tresses red; I'd deck me like th' unconquer'd Scots, Wha hae wi' Wallace bled. Then bind my claymore to my side, My kilt an' mutch gae bring; While Scottish lays soun' i' my lugs M'Kinley's no my king, For Charlie, bonnie Stuart Prince, Has turned me Jacobite; I'd wear displayed the white cockade.
They were dressed in full suits of flaming large-check red-and-yellow tartans, the tartan of that noble clan the 'Stunners, with black-and-white Shetland hose and red slippers.
'Truly, said Fergus Mac-Ivor, 'I think it can only be the inspiration of the tartans; for, though Waverley be always a young fellow of sense and honour, I have hitherto often found him a very absent and inattentive companion. 'We are the more obliged to him, said the Prince, 'for having reserved for this evening qualities which even such intimate friends had not discovered.
The others in the rear shouldered forward the front, and by their pressure added both physical impulse and additional ardour and confidence to those who were first to encounter the danger. 'Down with your plaid, Waverley, cried Fergus, throwing off his own; 'we'll win silks for our tartans before the sun is above the sea.
I could not sleep for six weeks without starting, and thinking I heard these terrible cries, and saw the bodies lying on the steps, all stiff and swathed up in their bloody tartans.
While he was deep sunk in his reverie, the rustle of tartans was heard behind him, a friendly arm clasped his shoulders, and a friendly voice exclaimed, 'Said the Highland prophet sooth? or must second-sight go for nothing? Waverley turned, and was warmly embraced by Fergus Mac-Ivor. 'A thousand welcomes to Holyrood, once more possessed by her legitimate sovereign!
