And before I could find time to answer him, he had removed himself, humming the shameful refrain of the previous night: "A la Bastille, a la Bastille, On aime bien, on aime bien, Nini, Peau de Chien." For three days neither of us spoke to the other. My exasperation was too deep for words. Was I, then, to be held responsible for his avatars!

The circumstances were too serious to refuse such a request and I nodded my assent. "Come on, boys," shouted H. "Ring the farm-bell, Nini, and call the others in." Their faces radiant with excitement, they gathered around the long table. H. filled up the glasses and then raising his "Here's to France, and to your safe return!" said he. "To France, and our safe return!" they echoed.

But what does Doretta care for the comments of the kitchen? She is beside herself with joy. She sings, she dances about the room, and breaks off every moment or two to give her father a kiss. Then she pours out the fulness of her emotion upon the cat Melanio and the doll Nini, promising the latter to bring her back a new frock from Milan.

"Dear me, Melanio is not very polite to-day," says Doretta, escorting the doll back to the sofa. "But you mustn't be offended; he's very seldom impolite. I think it must be the weather; doesn't the weather make you sleepy too, Nini? ...Come, let's take a nap; go by-bye, baby, go by-bye." Nini sleeps.

All of which, as Walter says, makes it more than likely that the old philosopher came to Chaumont to have his portrait modelled by Nini, especially as his relations with the master of Chaumont were of the most friendly nature. The old potteries in which the Italian artist worked have long since been turned into stables and a riding school.

The lengthy table in the servants' hall was literally covered with glasses containing jam and jelly of every description, awaiting their paper lids. Nini said there were over five hundred to me it seemed thousands, and I was heartily glad of a lull before the hospital should open.

What I decided to do must be done at once. "George and Leon, bring down my two big trunks, and tell Nini to hitch the donkey to his flat cart and drive to the side door." I had resolved to save what I could of H.'s work, and going to the studio closet, I began selecting the portfolios containing mounted drawings and etchings. It was useless to think of the paintings. They were too big.

Nini, the little traitor, had evidently told Yvonne of my preparations for departure, and the two girls, whose beds were in the next room to mine, had been unable to close their eyes, for as I blew out my lamp, I could hear their childish voices repeating the rosary: "Hail Mary full of Grace the Lord is with Thee..." I may have slept an hour.

Her head rests upon a cushion, her little rag and horse- hair body is wrapped in a woollen coverlet, her lids are closed; for Nini raises or lowers her lids according to the position of her body. Signor Odoardo looks at the clock and then glances out of the window. It is two o'clock and the snow is still falling. Doretta is struck by another idea.

Yvonne, aged seventeen, offered to milk the cows, make butter and cheese, look after the chickens and my duck farm, while Berthe and Nini, aged fourteen and ten, were left to take care of the chateau! Not a very brilliant equipment to run as large an establishment as ours, but all so willing and so full of good humour that things were less neglected than one might imagine.
