If a midshipman permits himself to be led into scrapes that many college boys regard as merely "larks," he is considered a disgrace to the Naval service. Always, at home and abroad, the "middy" must maintain his own dignity and that of his country and service. Should he fail seriously, he is regarded by his superiors and by the Navy Department as being unfit to defend the honor of his flag.

I guessed from what I had been told, that the Malbrouck show must be hereaway somewhere. I smelled the lake miles off oh, you could too if you were half the animal I am; I followed my nose and the slippery-elm between my teeth, and came at a double-quick suddenly on the fair domain. There the two sat in front of the house like turtle-doves, and as silent as a middy after his first kiss.

The officer examined it, touched his forehead with it in token of submission, and asked how many men were required. "Six will do," returned the middy, in a slow, meditative manner, as if a little uncertain on the point "yes, six will suffice. I only wish their escort beyond the gates. Friends might attempt a rescue in the town.

"You won't mind an old seaman, sir, 'gratulatin' you, sir, on getting your step so young? Ship my rullocks, why, it do seem but t'other day when you were a mite of a middy along o' me!" "Time flies, my man; and if youth were the only bar to our promotion we'd soon be all admirals of the fleet," said the other, laughing again.

"Well," replied Gascoigne, "it's the first time I ever heard a middy do such a bold thing; take care your rights of man don't get you in the wrong box there's no arguing on board of a man-of-war. The captain took it amazingly easy, but you'd better not broach that subject too often."

He was the youngest son of most respectable parents and intended for the Church, but as he preferred the sea service, his father yielded, and got him appointed a middy at fourteen years of age. Young Franklin soon saw some service. He was present at Copenhagen in 1801, and was appointed to the Investigator, which, under his cousin Captain Flinders, explored the Australian coast.

"Ah," said the second middy, thoughtfully; "I forgot about him. Bother the monkey! Phew! I am hot. I say, they may well call this Oily Bight. The sea looks just as if it had been greased. Oh, don't I wish I were in a good wet fog in the Channel. This is a scorcher."

After breakfast she was left alone in the hut, and she could hear the loud talking of the tugmen and see Lem working on the scow. Soon Middy Burnes' tug steamed away toward Ithaca, and Fledra knew that she was alone with no creature between her and Lem but Lon Cronk. When Lon and Lem returned, the hut was tidy. Fledra had hoped that if she made it so Lon might want her to stay.

"No, no! be a good boy, don't muss me up now!" She wore a plain, navy-blue skirt ... wore a white middy blouse with blue, flowing tie ... easy shoes that fitted snug to her pretty little feet ... her eyes never held such depths to them, her face never shone with such beauty before. I wore a brown sweater vest with pearl buttons ... corduroy trousers ... black oxfords ... a flowing tie....

Come on; we'll light another candle and stick it upon a piece of stone or slate. Then we'll have a good hunt." "Oh, very well," said the middy, rising. "Come on, then; but I'm sure we're only going to tire ourselves for nothing." "Never mind, it will keep us from thinking."
