Matthew's Gospel, the third to the tenth verse. "Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders. "Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.
The sweet calm smile preached peace to the mourners who had lost his guiding spirit, but they could not look on it long. The next morning, St. Matthew's Day, the body of John Coleridge Patteson was committed to the waters of the Pacific, his 'son after the faith, Joseph Atkin, reading the Burial Service. Mr. Atkin afterwards wrote to his mother.
But Madonna felt no desire to be informed particularly of what they were saying to each other. Much as Matthew's strange behavior had surprised and startled her, he was not the uppermost subject in her mind just then. It was the discovery of her secret, the failure of her little plan for helping Zack with her own money, that she was now thinking of with equal confusion and dismay.
Luke's version of this great discourse gives less prominence to the final coming than does Matthew's, and does not blend the two stages so inextricably together; but it gives no hint of the duration of the 'times of the Gentiles, and might well leave the impression that these were brief.
Perhaps there I may light upon some impoverished citizen fallen from a good estate who can remember some contemporary of Matthew's. London was smaller in those days than it is now, and men lived out their lives in one spot, and had leisure to be concerned about the affairs of their neighbours.
There had been the buying of the uniform, the visits to the camp in England, the parcels to send out always the parcels week by week. And now nothing; no more parcels, no more letters, silence. Only the last hungry pickings from Captain Matthew's tired memory and nervous speech. I turned away with a great shrinking.
"Gentlemen!" he cried. "I demand a hearing!" Dr. Vince sprang to his feet in terror. "Samuel Prescott!" he exclaimed. "I have been ordered out of the church!" proclaimed Samuel. "And I will not submit to it! I have spoken the truth, and I will not permit the evil-doers in St. Matthew's to silence me!" Mr. Hickman had sprung up. "Boy," he commanded, "leave this room!"
"Words won't cure our hunger to-day," remarked Andrew, and was frightened at his own temerity. Then Bartholomew put his hand on Matthew's arm and said: "Brother, give that bread to the Master." "Do you think I'm knave enough to eat it myself?" blazed up Matthew. He got up, went to the Master, and gave Him the bread. "Have you already eaten?" He asked. "Master, we are all satisfied."
And so I think that Matthew's arrangement of this pair of companion pictures is to be preferred to that which we find in Luke, who localises the incident in a different part of our Lord's ministry, and on a different occasion. I deal now only with the first of these two contrasted pictures, and consider the lightly-made vow, and Christ's sobering treatment of it. I. The too lightly uttered vow.
Again, when these documents, such as we find them, are examined, it will be observed that, even in the most elementary intelligence which they pretend to furnish, they are hopelessly at variance with one another. It is, for example, utterly impossible to reconcile Matthew's genealogy of Jesus with the one given by Luke.
