Ringwood and Jowler whined fearfully on the verge of the ditch for an instant, and then sprang in and crouched trembling at the feet of their master. The next instant the dark, thundering mass passed over head, being nothing less than an immense herd of buffalo driven forwards by the flames! The horses bowed their heads as if a thunderbolt was passing.

Now it would run back toward the men a moment, and, wheeling suddenly, again leap upon the foe, when its feet could be heard to strike against the ground; then it plunged forward, and after making a spring beyond, would return to the attach. "Here, Ringwood! Jowler!" cried Joe, and the hounds ran forward to the spot pointed out to them.

The -'th Regiment of Bengal Cavalry, then under the command of Lieut.-Colonel Julius Jowler, C.B., was known throughout Asia and Europe by the proud title of the Bundelcund Invincibles so great was its character for bravery, so remarkable were its services in that delightful district of India.

The young man was killed very soon after, and left his child with its mother. The black Prince forgave his daughter and bequeathed to her a handsome sum of money. I suppose that it was on this account that Jowler married Mrs.

But the poor girls screamed, and flung on their knees, and begged, and wept, and did their very best to prevent him. Dobble couldn't move; he was sitting on the block, blubbering like a baby. The door opened, and out Mr. Brisket came. "TO HIM, JOWLER!" says he. "KEEP HIM, JOWLER!" and the horrid dog flew at me, and I flew back into the corner, and drew my sword, determining to sell my life dearly.

"Who the Clink is he?" asked Mother Drum, eyeing me with no very Great Favour. "He says he is little Boy Jack," answered Mr. Jowler, gravely. "We will give him another name before we have done with him. Meantime he has a guinea in his pocket to pay his shot, and that's enough for the fat old Alewife of the Stag o' Tyne." "Fat again!" muttered Mother Drum.

Hill settled himself in his arm-chair, to take his after-dinner's nap: and he dreamed of blowing up cathedrals, and of oak bark floating upon the waters; and the cathedral was, he thought, blown up by a man dressed in a pair of woman's Limerick gloves, and the oak bark turned into mutton steaks, after which his great dog Jowler was swimming; when, all on a sudden, as he was going to beat Jowler for eating the bark transformed into mutton steaks, Jowler became Bampfylde the Second, king of the gipsies; and putting a horse- whip with a silver handle into Hill's hand, commanded him three times, in a voice as loud as the town-crier's, to have O'Neill whipped through the market-place of Hereford: but just as he was going to the window to see this whipping, his wig fell off, and he awoke.

"Liar! scoundrel! deceiver!" shouted I. "Turn, ruffian, and defend yourself!" But old Jowler, when he saw me, only whistled, looked at his lifeless daughter, and slowly left the room. Why continue the tale?

"Yes, we know him well." "Indeed! And what do you know of him?" "That he is a dangerous Irishman." "Right! And it was he, was it not, that pulled down, or caused to be pulled down, my rick of oak bark?" "It was." "And who was it that made away with my dog Jowler, that used to guard the tan-yard?" "It was the person that you suspect."

Ringwood and Jowler, whose sagacity had hitherto led them to keep in some measure aloof, knowing their efforts would be unavailing against so powerful an enemy without the fatal aim of their master, now sprang forward to the rescue, both seizing the prostrate foe by the throat. But he could not be made to relinquish his victim, nor did he make resistance.
