Certainly this is a powerful instance, among innumerable and striking ones, of the fact that the fears of children are by no means the result of the objects of alarm suggested to them by the ghost-stories, bogeys, etc., of foolish servants and companions; they quite as often select or create their terrors for themselves, from sources so inconceivably strange, that all precaution proves ineffectual to protect them from this innate tendency of the imaginative faculty.

As it is, both halves of the English-speaking race are apt to make official bogeys, to spell Washington or London as the case may be with a very big capital letter, and then to envisage this impersonation as something dark, mysterious, or even terrible.

And now the reddleman has in his turn followed Buonaparte to the land of worn-out bogeys, and his place is filled by modern inventions. The reddleman lived like a gipsy; but gipsies he scorned. He was about as thriving as travelling basket and mat makers; but he had nothing to do with them.

He was smoking very distastefully a pipe because there was plenty of strong shag at the Homestead but no cigarettes. Marcella had been watching him; it had amazed her to see how much more calmly he had taken the cigarette famine than she had guessed possible. "If I can go on like this, dearie," he said at last, "there'll be no more bogeys. I've been busy and very happy this last week.

'I only mean, the other replied more gravely, 'that what a man thinks, and makes with thinking, is the real thing. It's in the heart that sin is first real. The act is the least important end of it grave only because it is the inevitable result of the thinking. Action is merely delayed thinking, after all. Don't think ghosts and bogeys, I always say to children, or you'll surely see them.

He does not understand the French tongue, though he speaks it with great fluency and incredible success. He holds up a warning hand. "Now, keep your 'and off the tap of the gas-meter for one minute if you please," he rejoins, "and let me get a word in edgeways. I want" with great emphasis "vinblank one, vinrooge two, bogeys six, Dom one. Compree?"

In Samoa, I remember, certain fruits and fish and animals and so forth were tabooed to the chiefs, and nobody else ever dared to eat them. They thought it was wrong, and said, if they did, some nameless evil would at once overtake them. These nameless terrors, these bodiless superstitions, are always the deepest. People fight hardest to preserve their bogeys.

Lloyd George ridicules both these bogeys, but because such reforms contribute towards the efficiency of the people, even as wealth-producing machines and increase the incomes of the wealthy and the well-to-do. Mr. Lloyd George continued:

We are not afraid of bogeys, nor do we dread the silence and the dark. Friend Christian, you are deceived in this matter. When you say that Christ is the only true teacher, that He is the only hope of mankind, that He is the only Saviour, I must answer sharply that I do not believe that, and I do not think you believe it deep down in your heart.

No use stirring up bogeys now, when everybody is excited over the escape of that man." "All right, ma'am. But I saw somebody, just the same," the girl maintained obstinately. "No doubt it was Phil. He was up to see me."
