There was little prospect of success, until Ballyhoo and Avon added their efforts, when matters assumed a better shape. But the trouble was by no means over.

In fact their presence so comparatively near proved that they were either another part of the main herd, or if the ones first stampeded, had broken off again, after being well on their way to their regular pasturing grounds. "Look out! they may be Comanches!" called Ballyhoo to his youthful companion. "No, they are not either."

While he was busy at this brief task, the members of the little family kept their feet, discussing matters in which each was interested. "Well, I'm ready, Ballyhoo," called Avon, in his cheery voice, stepping quickly through the open door.

"Want an extra hand?" he asked. "Anything from a ballyhoo to a rough-rider?" The stout man wheeled and surveyed him in momentarily speechless wrath at the interruption. Then his eyes narrowed appraisingly as he noted the tall, lean, well-knit figure before him, and he demanded: "How the h l did you know that the Wild West act was all knocked to pieces?" "It isn't now," Jim smiled.

It happened to be the one which you just saw working on the ballyhoo over there, which you noticed was the ordinary slate color. We soaked cloths in the peroxide and covered the beast with them and then put blankets on top. After they had been on for awhile we washed the animal with ammonia and water and repeated the performance until that elephant was as white as snow.

As he joined the Proprietor the sound of hammering mingled with the noise of the blatant brass band and the cries of the ballyhoo spielers for the other Dreamland attractions, which came in through the open windows, and he saw that Stevenson, the mild eyed quiet man who is always on hand to rescue imperiled trainers and keepers when their own carelessness, or unexpected revolt on the part of the animals, leads to a fight, was rapidly nailing boards over the ventilating spaces above the cages.

"No; I will keep you under my eye all the way; if you see anything out of gear, you need only to signal, and I will fetch two or three of the boys with me." It struck the youth as strange that Ballyhoo should stop after starting for the dwelling. The young man had made up his mind there was something wrong there, and it seemed to him like a waste of time for his friend to hold back.

This remark caused several of the grinning ranchmen to turn toward Avon, who had slipped off the horse and laughed as he made answer: "I got into the worst scrape of my life," he explained, "and it would have gone hard with me if Ballyhoo hadn't turned up just as he did. The reason I was abroad was because Uncle Dohm thought it best I should come to camp after you fellows."

Whereupon, I take it, he'll rove forth again to seek his son and patch up a regular ballyhoo of a quarrel that almost disrupted the Holbein Club. You see, everybody insisted upon taking both sides, with terrifying results.

Thus young Burnet, as we have stated, was nearly always addressed as "Baby," because of his youth. Oscar Gleeson, one of the most skilful and famous cowmen of the Southwest, was addressed as "Ballyhoo," for the reason that, whenever he indulged in a shout or loud call, he used that exclamation.
