"There was one eccentric Irishman one of the best servants I ever had," continued Redpath, "who once made a sort of torpedo arrangement which achieved wonderful success. The fellow is with me still, and it is a treat to hear Flinn, that's his name, tell the story, but the fun of it mostly lies in the expressive animation of his own face, and the richness of his brogue as he tells it.
Flinn ran a few paces backward so as to reload in comparative safety, while Slagg followed his example, but in desperate haste. Before he had half charged the first barrel, a second shot from the heavy rifle laid the royal monster dead on the ground. "Well done!" cried Flinn, seizing his friend's hand and wringing it. "It's Nimrod you are, no less. I niver saw a purtier shot.
To be sure, he was not Katie Flinn, but he would do his best to take the place of that personage if she would kindly let him go to the said meeting with her. It was worth a dozen sittings even in prayer-meeting, Judge Erskine thought, to see the sudden clearing of that tearful face; the sudden radiant outlook from those wet eyes. Would he go? Would he really go? Could anything be more splendid!
"It's too hot to last long," observed Flinn, as he thrust home a ball and drew out the ramrod; "run her out, boys." The men obeyed, and were in the act of pulling at the tackle, when a shot from the enemy struck the gun on the muzzle, tore it from its fastenings, and hurled it to the other side of the deck.
At the same moment a ringing cheer was heard forward; there was a rush of many feet, and Flinn with his party poured aft, having come quietly in over the bows while the crew were engaged with us aft. "Launches to the rescue!" he shouted; "Hurroo, me bhoys! lay it on thick and heavy.
Besides Tom Bates, the new boys were Philip Towns, Jud Elderkin, Joe Clausin and Andy Flinn; the latter of Irish parentage, but well liked, even though his widowed mother had to take in washing to provide food for the numerous mouths dependent on her.
I returned to the cabin, and found that little Six-foot had stopped crying, and seemed disposed to sleep, so I put the bottle in a place of safety, and whispered to the skipper the doctor's arrangement. "All right," he returned. "You remain here. I must go on deck now; and I will mention to Flinn that you will not be on deck during the dog- watch."
1 Jud Elderkin, patrol leader. 2 Joe Clausin. 3 Andy Flinn. 4 Phil Towns. 5 Horace Poole. 6 Bob Tice. 7 Curly Baxter. 8 Cliff Jones, whose entire name was Clifford Ellsworth Fairfax Jones. 1 Frank Savage, patrol leader. 2 Billie Little, a very tall lad, and of course always called Little Billie. 3 Nat Smith. 4 Sandy Griggs. 5 Old Dan Tucker. 6 "Red" Conklin. 7 "Spider" Sexton. 8 "Gusty" Bellows.
She managed, however, to scrape clear by the skin of her teeth, and once fairly outside and clear of danger she went about and hove-to on the starboard tack, to wait for her prize. The "Artemise" had been placed in charge of Mr Flinn, who had selected me for his first and Smellie for his second lieutenant; Mr Woods acting as first on board the "Astarte."
From Derry Miss Macpherson wrote under date May 13th: "With the exception of two, all are on deck now, as bright as larks; they have carried up poor Jack Frost and Franks the runner. It is most touching to see them wrap them up in their rugs. Michael Flinn, the Shoreditch shoeblack, was up all night, caring for the sick boys. Poor Mike!
