The air was cold and bracing and gloriously free from the hospital combination of wienerwürst, ether, and dried peaches that had come to be a nightmare odor to him. He sat on the railing and drew in deep, refreshing breaths, and as he did so things began to right themselves.
When he found he could do no better, he decided to take one of the large ones. Then he said he was hungry, so he and Mary took turn about holding it while the other ate "po' man's pickle" and wienerwurst. It was two o'clock by the time they reached the avenue, and by four they were foot-sore and weary, but they trudged bravely along from house to house asking for work.
It sounded as if he were telling the boy to get down off that deck. But it was only Wienerwurst he was talking to. For, when he made that fine gesture which Teacher had shown them, Wienerwurst, who had crept up behind him, thought his master was playing some game, and jumped up at his outstretched fingers.
He soon sends them flying back to their house on the roof, where they chatter and coo in great excitement. But they do not lose their tempers like "Mr. Stuckup," the turkey, or old "Miss Crosspatch," the guinea-hen with the ugly voice. Once little Wienerwurst caught a pretty pigeon by its tail and bit it. Then Mr.
Dot mule he has a soreness by his mouth. I vill knock off your shoulders mit your head robbermans!" "Yi-yi!" howled Rattlesnake, roaring with laughter and ducking his head, "somebody git this here sour-krout off'n me!" One of the band yanked Fritz back by the coat-tail, and the woods rang with Rattlesnake's vociferous comments. "The dog-goned little wienerwurst," he yelled, amiably.
It made Marmaduke's eyes almost pop out of his head to see the way the Queen and her mandarins, and his three little yellow friends, devoured those dishes, the stewed rats, the fricasseed shark's fins, and the old birds' nests. Now Wienerwurst didn't seem to object to that sort of food at all, but "licked it right up" like the Chinamen.
The hot dog, as found here, is just as we know him throughout the length and breadth of our own land a dropsical Wienerwurst entombed in the depths of a rye-bread sandwich, with a dab of horse-radish above him to mark his grave; price, creation over, five cents the copy. The woolly plush hat shows no change either, except that if anything it is slightly woollier in the Alps than among us.
"Rogue, rogue, rogue!" growled Rover in his deep voice. "Run, run, run!" barked Brownie. "Rough, rough rough, rough!" said little Wienerwurst in his funny voice. "There he is," said the Toyman, "Mr. Jim Crow and all his wicked chums. See there!" All the children looked in the direction in which his finger pointed. Over in the far corner of the field a flock of crows flew up from the waving corn.
There, behind the sleigh, running and leaping and paddling and waddling and frisking and scampering came a strange procession. There were Rover and Brownie and little Wienerwurst, Teddy and Methusaleh and all the horses, Primrose, Daisy, Buttercup, Black-Eyed Susan and all the cows. He could see their tongues hanging out it was so hard to keep up with the dogs and the horses.
And Father and the Toyman made Jake Miller chain up the wicked dog very tight this time with a chain that would never break. And soon that bad dog died, which was a good thing too. Nobody wasted many tears on him. But little Wienerwurst got well and strong, and chased the pretty pink pigeons in fun of course just as fast as ever he did. By the fire sat the Toyman.
