We were lucky to secure the services of several non-commissioned officers with Regular experience; Colour-Sergeants Moore, Williams, Bassett and Waldon, and Sergeant Howland worked untiringly, whilst the keenness of the officers to qualify themselves to instruct their men was beyond praise.
Walden, we must go! Lady Elizabeth Messing is coming to lunch with us at Badsworth. You have no doubt heard of her eldest daughter of the Earl of Charrington! yes, we must really be going! I think I may say, may I not, your Grace?" here he bent towards the ducal Lumpton "that we are all highly pleased with the way in which Mr. Waldon has effected the restoration of the church?"
"No," replied Dr. Jermyn quickly. "I doubt whether I can add much to what you already know. I suppose Mr. Waldon has told you about her illness. The fact is, I suppose her maid Juanita will be able to tell you really more than I can." I could not help feeling that Dr. Jermyn showed a great deal of reluctance in talking. "You have been with her several days, though, haven't you?"
Don't you understand? The second message is signed Tracy Edwards." It came as quite as much a shock of surprise to me as to Waldon. "Don't you understand?" he repeated. "Your sister first learned from Dr. Jermyn what was going on. She moved the Lucie down here near Seaville in order to be near the wireless station when the ship bearing her rival, Valerie Fox, got in touch with land.
Jack Waldon," he went on, as we edged our way toward the gate, "the brother of Mrs. Tracy Edwards, who disappeared so strangely from the houseboat Lucie last night at Seaville. That is the case you're going to write up, isn't it?" It was then for the first time that I noticed the excited young man beside Kennedy was really his companion.
It was quite evident that he had been waiting for the return of Waldon anxiously. "You find us considerably upset, Professor Kennedy," he greeted Craig, as his brother-in-law introduced us. Edwards turned and led the way toward the saloon.
We had the Nautilus to ourselves, and as she was a very comfortable little craft, we really had a very congenial time, a plunge over her side, a good dinner, and then a long talk out on deck under the stars, in which we went over every phase of the case. As we discussed it, Waldon followed keenly, and it was quite evident from his remarks that he had come to the conclusion that Dr.
"Well, since I know pretty well what I want to ask you in the matter of fire," replied Joe, "and since I've got a puzzling paper problem here, suppose we tackle the hardest first, and come to the known, and easier, trick later." "Just as you say," assented Mr. Waldon. "What's your paper problem?" Joe's answer was to take from the valise several hundreds of the circus tickets.
"Quiet, fellows," he adjured in a low voice. "See anything?" whispered Bart, who was nearest him. "I thought I caught a glimpse of a fellow stealing into that alley half-way down the block," returned Frank. "And there goes another one," he added, with a trace of excitement in his voice. "I was looking that way and I didn't see anything," murmured Billy Waldon rather incredulously.
It was evident that Waldon was much relieved at having been able to bring assistance, in which he had as much confidence as he reposed in Kennedy. At any rate it was something to be nearing the scene of action again.
