One of our correspondents has sent us the following treatment with permanganate of potash which he has found the best roup remedy he has ever tried: Dissolve 1 ounce of permanganate of potash in 3 pints of water, hold the fowl's head in this for a second, then open the beak and rinse out the mouth in the solution.
Roup Treatment. Up to a week ago the chickens had been exceptionally well in every way. Now they seem to have a cold and a running at the nose and with it a bad odor. It was suggested that this might be the beginning of roup, but I see no swell-head. The distinguishing characteristic of roup is not so-called "swell head" or other form of cold, but the offensive roupy odor.
Ay, ay, bein' a man, he wouldna think to tak off the chintz an' hae a look at the chair withoot it." Here Hendry, who had paid no attention to the conversation, broke in "Was ye speirin' had I seen Sam'l Duthie? I saw 'im yesterday buyin' a fender at Will'um Crook's roup." "A fender! Ay, ay, that settles the queistion," said Leeby; "I'll warrant the fender was for Chirsty's parlour.
When he attended the roup at Pitfoodles a day of historical prices and purchased in open competition, at three times its value, a small stack ladder, Kilbogie was convulsed, and Mains had to offer explanations.
Another member would "thrip down the throat" of the auctioneer that he had a right to his former seat if he continued to pay the same price for it. The auctioneer was screamed at for favouring his friends, and at times the roup became so noisy that men and women had to be forcibly ejected. Then was Pete's chance.
"And so the Fernlands is to be sold at last," I said, casually meeting Mr. Nibble, our under-sheriff "Poor N , I am grieved for him, he has struggled hard against oppression." "It is quite true, sir," replied the man of the law, "a horning came down last night, but it will answer no end for Messrs. Sharke and Scrapepen, have advertised the whole of the property for public roup on Tuesday next."
The counting of these bottles was a labor, but it is not even by them that the roup is remembered. Among them some sacrilegious hands found a bundle of papers with a sad blue ribbon round them. They were the Painted Lady's love-letters, the letters she had written to the man. Why or how they had come back to her no one knew.
"But just exactly six months and three days afterwards, a clerk belonging to a branch o' the Commercial Bank called upon me, and, after making his bow, said he 'Mr Middlemiss, I have a bill to present to you. "'A bill! said I, 'what sort o' a bill, sir? Is it an auctioneer's, for a roup o' furniture or a sale o' stock?
'Died! said the old woman, dropping her pipe, and rising and coming forward upon the floor 'died? are you sure of that? 'Troth, am I, said Dinmont, 'for it made nae sma' noise in the country-side. He died just at the roup of the stocking and furniture; it stoppit the roup, and mony folk were disappointed.
Outside of this, the location is not especially favorable. The temperature is milder in the winter than in the East, but the Petaluma winter is one of continual rain which develops roup to a greater extent than we have it in the East. The prices received for high grade eggs in San Francisco is in the winter about equal to the top prices in New York.
