Payson's surprise, made a clumsy excuse, and abruptly took his leave. He felt the need of being alone; he was conscious of a vague distrust of himself, which degraded him in his own estimation. Was he, like characters he had read of in books, the victim of a fatality?
Payson's inspection of the performers in this strange concert was anything but satisfactory to him. The manner of the savages was impudent and brutal beyond anything he had yet seen in them, and he fancied that their sneering and malignant grimaces and serpent-like contortions of the body expressed evil and vengeful passions that burned within.
Under Foreman Payson's direction a score of men seized the other end of the line and then began to haul. Harry danced up and down in a frenzy. "Tom, you idiot," he gasped. "You haven't made the line fast about yourself." "Not yet," came the cheery answer. "That wouldn't be fair play. Haul away on our friend out yonder."
"And I thought her false to her trust!" He aimed his gun at Payson's heart. "I ought to kill you for this!" Jack spread out his arms and calmly replied: "I'm ready." Dick dropped his gun and slipped it into the holster with a gesture of despair. "But it's too late now, too late!" In his eagerness to tell Dick the way he had solved the problem, Jack spoke nervously and quickly.
Harry Hazelton was riding as fast as he could urge a spirited horse. In another moment Hazelton had reined up at the edge of the group, dismounting and tossing the reins to one of the workmen. "My man, you get on that horse and fly for a rope!" ordered Harry. This last Hazelton shot back over his shoulder, for he was pushing his way through the rapidly forming crowd to Payson's side.
Both Lane's comrades searched his face with questioning eyes, and while Lane returned that gaze there was a little constrained silence. "Bronson examined me and said I'd live to be eighty," added Lane, with dry humor. "You're a liar!" burst out Blair. On Red Payson's worn face a faint smile appeared. "Carry on, Dare."
She let him have the room. Cantankerous restrictions did not ruffle him. "Of course what you say GOES," he said, giving her his friendly grin. "Any one that takes boarders has GOT to be careful. You're in for a bad cold, ain't you?" "I've got grippe again, that's what I've got," she almost snapped. "Did you ever try Payson's 'G. Destroyer'? G stands for grippe, you know. Catchy name, ain't it?
But, even under these circumstances, there was a residue of suspicion still left in her mind. She asked for the name of the lady to whose benevolent assistance Amelius had been indebted. Rufus took out one of his cards, and wrote Mrs. Payson's name and address on it. "Your nature, my dear, is not quite so confiding as I could have wished to see it," he said, quietly handing her the card.
