"Ha! my Lord, you say well you say well," said Aram, with a marked change of countenance; and, quickening his pace, he joined Lester's side, and the thread of the previous conversation was broken off. "You will pardon me," said he, "but I cannot convince myself that man would be happier were he without emotions; and that to enjoy life he should be solely dependant on himself!"
The same journalist spoke of Theydon himself, and had even ferreted out the fact that Mrs. Lester was the widow of an English barrister who had died at Shanghai. On reaction, Theydon saw that there was nothing unusual in this statement. The connection between the metropolitan press and the bar is old and intimate, and scores of junior barristers must remember Arthur Lester's beginnings.
Caruthers filled a glass with ice and brandy and soda, and walked back to his place by the mantel, on which he rested his arm, while he clinked the ice in the glass and looked down into it. "I was at the first night of 'The Sultana' this evening," said Van Bibber, slowly and uncertainly. "Oh, yes," assented the elder man, politely, and tasting his drink. "Lester's new piece. Was it any good?"
Lester's handiwork a great help to her, and was ambitious of designing a cupboard herself, very much after the pattern of the study one. As she was tracing a part of the delicate border edging the panels, she suddenly started, and the thought flashed across her: 'It must be one of these buds that contains the secret of the lock or spring, and that is the meaning of the words:
"He took two hundred head from Sanderson when he ought to have taken the whole damn herd which he'd orders to do. And then, instead of driving them direct to Lester's he made camp just on the other side of Devil's Hole three or four miles, Morley said. I don't know what for, except that maybe he's decided to give Sanderson the steers he'd taken from him the damned fool!
The next day, faithful to his appointment, Aram arrived at Lester's. The good Squire received him with a warm cordiality, and Madeline with a blush and a smile that ought to have been more grateful to him than acknowledgements. She was still a prisoner to the sofa, but in compliment to Aram, the sofa was wheeled into the hall where they dined, so that she was not absent from the repast.
There was silence; then Agatha said more slowly, 'It does look rather suspicious, now I have remembered about Jane, because she has been such friends lately with Major Lester's valet. You know she always walks home from church with him. Elfie was laughing about it, and saying she had soon picked up a follower.
The former owner had laid out flower-beds, and arranged green hardwood tubs for the reception of various hardy plants and vines. The house was painted white, with green shutters and green shingles. It had been Lester's idea, since this thing must be, that Jennie might keep the house in Hyde Park just as it was, but she did not want to do that. She could not think of living there alone.
He had never seen anything like it before. There were cards of sympathy, calls of inquiry, notices in the newspaper. Robert saw an item in the Inquirer and decided to go to Chicago. Imogene called with her husband, and they were admitted to Lester's room for a few minutes after Jennie had gone to hers. Lester had little to say. The nurse cautioned them that he was not to be talked to much.
But, alas! few months had passed away, before the scales fell from her eyes before she perceived that the man upon whom she had lavished the wealth of her young heart's affections, could not make her happy. A weak and vain young man, Fenwick could not stand the honour of being Mr. Lester's son-in-law, without having his brain turned.
