Besides the usual Midsummer faintness that overtakes the stock market, my own specialties were a good deal more than faint. On the 20th of August I took the afternoon train to spend my two weeks' holiday at Lenox; and during much of the journey I gazed at the Wall Street edition of the afternoon paper that I had purchased as I came through the Grand Central Station.
Abner was not present, having gone at an early hour over to Lenox furnaces, where he was acquainted, to carry the news from Northampton, if it should not have arrived there, and notify the workmen that there would be goings-on at Barrington, Tuesday, and they were expected to be on hand.
Also, Jane under the coverlets was fully dressed for her ghost raid at Lenox Hall. Miss Fairlie's step paused at the door! Jane tittered, but Judith breathed the regular tones of sleep. For a moment it seemed the inspector would knock! She must want something! Someone else came along the corridor and directly at that door they chose to whisper!
Strange developments must have taken place during his absence, if Lenox the woman-hater, the confirmed recluse were actually dining out. He approached the snoring Pathan and roused him, not ungently, with the toe of his boot.
The Lenox, however, went straight on, and in a short time the two vessels were quite near each other. Upon the deck of the repeller now appeared the director in charge, who, with a speaking-trumpet, hailed the Lenox and requested her to lay to, as he had something to communicate.
After a time Eugene and Suzanne parted for the night. It was agreed that they should see each other in the morning, that they should go back as far as Lenox together. Mrs. Dale was to help Eugene get a divorce. It was a delightfully affectionate and satisfactory situation, but somehow Eugene felt that he was not handling it right. He went to bed in one part of the house Suzanne in another Mrs.
A man proffers tobacco to a friend in trouble as instinctively as a woman proffers a caress. "Have a cheroot?" he said, holding them out: and Lenox checked his pacing. "Thanks, no. I've no taste for 'em. Never had." "Better cultivate it, then. These are A1 Havannahs. A passing extravagance. Good to begin upon. I'd drop pipes for a time, if I were you.
"You know what the schoolboy said when he started kissing his first sweetheart, 'It takes too long to get enough of it." "You seem to be very fond of referring to that particular subject, Lenox." "Well, yes; to tell you the truth I am," and then he referred to it again in another form.
The plan adopted at Lenox, and recommended for all small villages which cannot secure a better outlet, is simply a multiplication of these drains to a sufficient extent. A description of the manner in which the Lenox work is arranged will illustrate the adaptation of the system to its circumstances. As circumstances vary, the adaptation must be modified.
First addressing herself to Adolphus, she desired to know what he would choose: and his desire was to have a cane and a watch, which his mother promised he should have the next morning. "And pray, Leonora," said Mrs. Lenox, "what is your wish?" "Me, mamma, me?" answered she, trembling, "if you do but love me, I have nothing else to wish for!"
