Elizabeth Royal, at Katie's special request, had been her guest for the last ten days. Her father had gone home again the day he brought her and was unable to return for the wedding and to take his daughter home afterward, as he had intended; but he had sent Mrs. Eveleigh, his cousin and housekeeper.
He was formulating in his mind what would happen to Katie if he caught the night city editor under his chin and slammed his head against the wall. He knew what would happen to the editor and to himself, but it was Katie's fate that kept his hands flat to his sides. "I would rather throw up my position than have done it, sir," Katie pleaded. "There are some things never ought to be printed.
A shrewd smile flitted over Elizabeth's face, but she made no comment, and Katie went on hurriedly to ask, "What shall we do to amuse ourselves to-day, Betsey?" Another slight movement of the hearer's lips responded. This name was Katie's special term of endearment, and never used except when they were alone; no one else ever called her by it. "I don't know," she said.
Don't think I don't see that. 'Genevieve's a sweet girl, said Katie, loyally. 'A darned sight too sweet. Somebody ought to tell her mother. 'Why did you speak to her if you did not like her? 'Wanted to get to know you, said the young man simply. They walked on in silence. Katie's heart was beating with a rapidity that forbade speech.
Such, for instance, was her present secret Katie's and hers the secret of their fearing so much that they should n't like Percival's wife, who was not from Boston, but from New York.
At least it possesses all these qualities in a higher degree than any future triumph can possibly possess them. Such a triumph was Davie's. It was Katie's too in a way, but it was Davie's chiefly on this occasion, because it was his for the first time. But that did not spoil Katie's pleasure at all. Quite the contrary.
In truth, toward the end of a week's separation she generally began to hunger painfully for a sight of her Katie's face, to feel the clasp of her soft arms, and to this was added in the present instance serious uneasiness respecting the strain to which her sense of responsibility as nurse as well as housekeeper must subject so inexperienced a creature.
All sorts of young people were to help, and it could hardly be but that some foolish things should be said and done where there was so much to excite and nothing to restrain, and her Katie's name was as well to be kept out of it all.
She would speak of Captain Cuttwater, of Katie's lessons, of the new dress they were to make for their mother, of Mr. Everscreech's long sermon, of anything in fact but of Harry Norman. Now this was very hard on poor Linda. Her heart was bursting within her to tell her sister that she also was beloved; but she could not do so without some little encouragement.
'Indeed, she should, said Uncle Bat, who was somewhat hard- hearted about the affair of the accident, and had been cruel enough, after hearing an account of it, to declare that it was all Katie's fault. 'Indeed, she should; and if she had gone to bed a little earlier in the evening it would have been all the better for Master Norman's boat.
