The paper-boat tossed up and down, and in the middle of the stream it went so quick that the Tin-soldier trembled; but he remained steadfast, showed no emotion, looked straight in front of him, shouldering his gun. All at once the boat passed under a long tunnel that was as dark as his box had been. 'Where can I be coming now? he wondered. 'Oh, dear! This is the black imp's fault!
Later she was to understand herself better; she was to understand that her secret diffidence was connected with the imp, was the imp's child in her as it were; later, too, she was to learn that the imp was working for her eventual salvation, in the moral sense. But she had not yet reached that turning in the path of her life.
Then the false O Toyo came in and harassed the Prince until morning. The following night the same thing occurred, and the Prince was subjected to the imp's tyranny, while his guards slept helplessly around him.
The room was always blue and foul with cigarette smoke; whosoever entered it must sit, suffocating, and listen to the imp's interminable gasconade concerning his scandalous career. The oddest thing of all was the relation existing between McGuire and his benefactor. The attitude of the invalid toward the cattleman was something like that of a peevish, perverse child toward an indulgent parent.
But different people have different tastes, and here is that little imp of a gipsy-tinker ready to turn slave for my master; and, odd enough, my master, who, I should have said beforehand, would have made short work of imp, and imp's family, and have sent Hall, the Bang-beggar, after them in no time my master, as they tell me, is in his way quite fond of the lad, and if he could, without vexing my lady too much, he would have made him what the folks here call a Latiner.
There she comes again, however, for the arch under the creepers is darkened again, and he looks up with a pleasant smile upon his face to greet her. "God save us! What imp's trick is this?"
"Then fail her and let the other women win. It's too late to repent, anyhow, for here's where we turn off." The Imp itself seemed to be running away, so swiftly and silently it covered the new road leading off into the hills. Presently it was climbing them. "I want to get where no call-boy monotonously repeating 'Doc-tor Bur-rns, Doc-tor Bur-rns', can get hold of me," the Imp's driver explained.
"To be sure he will, if your auntie wishes it," I cried, "so step aboard, my hearties, and lively!" In a moment the Imp's hand was in mine, and he was smiling up at me with wet lashes. "I knew 'Timothy Bone' could never be a a 'mutinous rogue," he said, and turned to aid Dorothy aboard with the air of an admiral on his flagship.
"Are you going far, then, Uncle Dick?" "Yes, very far," I answered, glancing uneasily from the Imp's drooping figure to Lisbeth. "I wonder where?" "Oh well er down the rivers" I stammered, quite at a loss. "Y-e-s, but where?" persisted Dorothy. "Well, to er to " "To the 'Land of Heart's Delight," Lisbeth put in, "and you may come with us, after all, if Uncle Dick will take you."
"Yes, I've told her." "And what did she say?" The Imp's utterance was jerky from her perturbation. "Look here, Mina, mightn't you go and ask her? It's a long story, and I'm deuced hungry, you know." Mina needed no further permission. She rose and flew. Neeld, though uncertain what was expected of him, sat on, nervously eating gooseberries a fruit which rarely agreed with him.
