One can't pass down the ward without some such request falling on one's ears. She is astonished at her earache; she is astonished at what pain can be; it is unexpected. She is ready to be angry with herself, with her pain, with her ear. It is monstrous, she thinks.... The pain of one creature cannot continue to have a meaning for another.
Such lesser troubles are colds, headache, catarrh, dyspepsia, nervousness, neuralgia, sore throat, skin eruptions, rheumatism, toothache, earache, affections of the eyes, lameness, sprains, bruises, cuts, and burns. Civilization has brought us great blessings but it has also brought with it many dangers to health.
I surely love Bill enough, but if he doesn't love me maybe I'd better try somebody else. It's done here. "But not Trymie Icanspoon! No, he makes me sick. I guess I'll eat pickles." In the pantry she found the under scullery maid screaming with an earache. "You poor child," she said, sympathetically, "I'll run and get my husband and he'll cure it."
Instead, he said, pleasantly: "To-day, Fibs, I want you to make a round of the drug stores. It's not a hopeful job indeed, I can't think it can amount to anything but have a try at it. You remember, Mr. Hendricks had the earache " "I do, indeed! He had it a month ago and what's more, he denied it at first."
"Let's walk." Oliver fell into step beside her. "I haven't seen you in ages," she said. "I know. How are the girls?" "Maria has an earache, but it's getting better. They're fine." She gave him an encouraging look. "I made something for you a present." "Oooo . . ." "I was going to mail it, but I didn't want to embarrass you." "It's been a long time since I was embarrassed." "It's a valentine."
And when Hella's hat fell into the water and we were still looking after it in fits of laughter, all of a sudden we found Anneliese standing behind us offering Hella a fine lace shawl which she had brought with her for the evening because she so readily gets earache. "Wouldn't you like to use this shawl, so that you won't have to go back to Vienna without a hat?"
It was fully three quarters of an hour later when Jan saw Melisse, with Iowaka's red shawl over her head, walking slowly and with extreme precision of step back to the cabin. "I wonder if she has the earache," he said to himself, watching her curiously. "That is Iowaka's shawl, and she has it all about her head."
The heat may be kept up for an hour. If too weak to stand even this, the feet and legs may be first fomented, and afterwards the body. This treatment has saved many cases from disaster. See also British Cholera; Diarrhoea. Dyspepsia. See Indigestion. Earache. In the common form this is purely neuralgic.
Perhaps she was his sister; but, no, there was no mistaking the mother-love shining out from the brown eyes turned so quickly upon the boy when he moaned, as if in pain, and seemed about to waken. "He's been sick most all the way," she said. "There's something the matter with his ear, I think, as he complains of that. Do children ever die with the earache?" Irving Stanley hardly thought they did.
And when he had stopped muttering and tossing with fever, he woke one night with an earache. "Mercy to us!" Grandma cried distractedly. "We ain't even got salt enough for a hot salt bag, or carbolic and oil to drop in his poor blessed ear!" Indeed that night seemed to all of them like a dark cage, shutting them away from any help for Jimmie.
