Thus, in Harrison's 'History of London, though nearly every church in the City and its immediate suburbs is figured, St. Katherine's is not drawn. Katherine's; in Dodsley's 'London, 1761, it is described but not figured; and Wilkinson, in his 'Londina Illustrata, passes it over entirely.
In the vessel wherein they work there is a room abaft in which they are to sleep, and in the forecastle a kind of cabin for the overseer. Ib. p. 254, there is an admirable paper, very likely by Bentham, on the punishment of convicts, which Johnson might have read with advantage. See Boswell's Hebrides, Sept. 25. Malone says that he had in vain examined Dodsley's Collection for the verses.
The Spleen, in Dodsley's Collection, on which you say he chiefly rested, is not poetry . BOSWELL. 'Does not Gray's poetry, Sir, tower above the common mark? JOHNSON. 'Yes, Sir; but we must attend to the difference between what men in general cannot do if they would, and what every man may do if he would.
It is not strange, therefore, that, in the French verses of Frederic, we can find nothing beyond the reach of any man of good parts and industry, nothing above the level of Newdigate and Seatonian poetry. His best pieces may perhaps rank with the worst in Dodsley's collection. In history, he succeeded better.
... facies non omnibus una, Nec diversa tamen . The Bishop thought not; and said, he supposed that many pieces in Dodsley's collection of poems, though all very pretty, had nothing appropriated in their style, and in that particular could not be at all distinguished.
Walpole, possibly, if he is not too fine to dine in a tavern; a young Irishman, a Mr. Bourke, who they say is a wonder of eloquence and learning in fine, all the wits of Mr. Dodsley's shop. Quick, Gumbo, a coach, and my French grey suit! And if gentlemen ask me, 'Who gave you that sprig of lilac you wear on your heart-side? I shall call a bumper, and give Lilac for a toast."
It should not be concealed, however, that it is printed with Mr. Jago's name in Dodsley's Collection, and is mentioned as his in a letter of Shenstone's. Perhaps West gave it without naming the author, and Hawkesworth, receiving it from him, thought it his; for his he thought it, as he told me, and as he tells the public.
Shakspeare could neither learn nor derive anything from the luscious manner of Lilly: but in Marlow's Edward the Second I certainly imagine that I can discover the feebler model of the earliest historical pieces of Shakspeare. Of the old comedies in Dodsley's collection, The Pinner of Wakefielde, and Grim, the Collier of Croydon, seem alone to belong to a period before Shakspeare.
I have not Dodsley's Plays by me, but, if my memory does not deceive me, not one of them keeps the stage; nor did dear Charles Lamb make many in love with that huge heap in the British Museum. Alas! all these good people, now grown so rusty, fusty, and forgotten, might have rolled under their tongues, as a sweet morsel, those lines which civil Abraham Cowley sent to Leviathan Hobbes:
All this has led me, after a roundabout fashion, to what became for some time the chief delight of my Winters an employment, moreover, which I have taken up afresh at odd times during my life. It came about thus. My uncle had made me a present of an old book with pictures in it. It was called The Preceptor one of Dodsley's publications. There were wonderful folding plates of all sorts in it.
