If I had not seen Grace Draper's blanched face and the terrible look in her eyes when she had heard Dicky's exclamation of indifference toward her, I would not have dreamed that her heart held any other emotion except that of happy enjoyment of the day. She laughed and chatted as if she had not a care in the world, directing much of her conversation to me.
"Well, what do you think of it?" he demanded at last, in a hurt tone, as I finished my inspection of the walls, which were almost covered with the originals of Dicky's best magazine illustrations, framed in narrow, black strips of wood. "It is truly wonderful, Dicky," I returned, trying to make my voice enthusiastic.
Then the G. B. said to Oswald, 'You seem the eldest, but I explained to him that it was Dicky's idea, so my being eldest didn't matter. Then he said to Dicky 'You are a minor, I presume? Dicky said he wasn't yet, but he had thought of being a mining engineer some day, and going to Klondike. 'Minor, not miner, said the G. B. 'I mean you're not of age?
He read the Sonnets, but not the other document which was in a sealed envelope. He found also a bundle of Dicky Pilkington's receipts and his last letter threatening foreclosure. There was little he could do for Rickman, but he promised himself the pleasure of settling Dicky's claim. But even that satisfaction was denied him. For Dicky had just renewed his bill for a nominal three months.
He picked up the scourge, and stood erect again, crushing it into his pocket. "Will you make way, please," he ordered, "while I fetch a cover to hide your blasted handiwork?" He strode through them, and they fell back to give him passage. He walked straight to the coach, pulled the door open, and, in the act of dragging forth a rug, caught sight of Dicky's small, scared face.
Dicky's eager eyes looked up from his white face into mine. His voice, weak, but thrilling with the old love note, repeated my name over and over, as if he could not say it enough. I sank on my knees beside the bed in which Dicky lay. I realized in a hazy sort of fashion that the room must be Harry Underwood's own bed chamber, but I spent no time in conjecture.
This night was always associated in Dicky's mind with the memory of stewed camel's-meat. At Ibrahim's words he turned his head from the rank steam, and fingered his pistol in the loose folds of his Arab trousers. The dancing-girl saw the gesture and laid a hand upon his arm. "Thou art one against a thousand," she whispered; "wait till thou art one against one."
"A pretty one-eyed lot." "Shows how they love their country. Their eyes were put out by their mothers when they were babes, to avoid conscription.... Listen, Yankee: Egypt is talking. Now, we'll see!" Dicky's lips were pressed tight together, and he stroked his faint moustache with a thumb-nail meditatively.
The old man had just raised four thousand on the Harden library, the only security that he, Dicky, would accept. "I suppose," said Rickman simply, "you'd no idea of its value when you let him buy it?" Dicky stared through his eye-glass with his blue eyes immense and clear. "My dear fellow, do you take me for a d d fool?" So that had been Dicky's little game? Trust Dicky.
I should die if left alone here much longer;" her soft hair floated down the white robe, and the blue eyes were filled with tears. "Do tell me, don't you think they will find Percy?" "Yes, indeed!" declared Polly, cuddling up to the little woman. "Oh, Auntie! remember when Dicky's leg was broken." "But this is much worse," said Mrs. Whitney, sobbing, and holding close to Polly's warm hand.
