It would be almost impossible to descend it. The way up was by a narrow passage which was now choked by rocks the Indians had piled there. On either side of the cavern's entrance the rock rose in steep slopes, not altogether impossible of being scaled, but a hindrance to a quick retreat. That is what Captain Marshall meant when he said the Yaquis were practically backed up against a stone wall.
Morton now crept along the ledge, or rather he was beginning to do so, having put forward his shoulders and arms to make a first step in advance from the spot on which he was resting, when a hand was put forth from one corner of the cavern's mouth, a hand armed with a pistol; and a shot was fired.
These whilom friends rushed with a loud shout to the cavern's mouth. But when they saw the fierce eyes of the lion gleaming in the dark and heard his fearful growl, this loud shout suddenly died away into a feeble, cowardly whimper, and these boastful creatures at the crackling of a dry twig turned and scampered away like so many jack-rabbits.
"Here's a hole in the rocks up here," came plainly now. "Ramsden," whispered Don in Jem's ear. They stole back a little more into the gloom, Jem offering no opposition now, for it seemed to them, so plainly could they see the bright greenish-hued daylight, and the configuration of the cavern's mouth, that so sure as any one climbed up to the shelf and looked in they would be seen.
Solomon broke it by saying: "That 'ere black pill o' mine went right down into the stummick o' the hill an' give it quite a puke you hear to me." They went to the cavern's mouth and looked in. "They's an awful mess in thar. I don't keer to see it," said Solomon. Near them they discovered a warrior who had crawled out of that death chamber in the rocks.
All at once, as she gazed upon him, there returned to her a memory of that dark time in the cavern's pit, where he had found her, and which, in the general rejoicing over her safety she had, for the present, almost forgotten. By now, save for this old man, she might have been dead. He received the onslaught of her embrace exactly as he had accepted the gift of the blanket in silence.
It was being worked by inexpert hands, for the time was something jerky; but it was robbed of its tinny meanness and even majesty by the hugeness of a cavern's roof, as well as by the crashing, swinging march it played wild -wonderful invented for lawless hours and a kingless people. "Marchons! Citoyens! The procession began to tramp in time to it, and the rock shook.
Some on the lower boughs which crost their way, Fixing their bearded fibres, round and round, With many a ring and wild contortion wound; Some to the passing wind at times, with sway Of gentle motion swung; Others of younger growth, unmoved, were hung Like stone-drops from a cavern's fretted height."
He broods over the thought with the intensity of a narrow and unoccupied mind; and a few nights after, he has eaten but let us draw a veil before the larder of a savage his chin is pinned down on his chest, a slight congestion of the brain comes on; and behold he finds himself again at that cavern's mouth, and something ugly does jump out upon him: and the cavern is a haunted spot henceforth to him and to all his tribe.
Why else did I creep through the lair of the dragon worm and pass the path of perils but to ask you that? And the choya guards you not well." Again she laughed. "We came to the cavern's end and, there were her Akka. And the Akka can see us as shadows. But it was my desire to surprise you with my coming, Larree," the voice was silken.
