"The tears began to flow down Thora's face, and, nestling closer to me, she placed her hand on my arm, and murmured, "'Dear Engelbert!"
He was sitting at Thora's side and her hand was in his hand. He let it fall and took the letter offered him. "I cannot explain this letter," he said, "unless I preface it with some facts regarding my unhappy childhood and youth. I am, as you know, the son of Dr. Macrae, but I have been a disinherited son ever since I can remember.
Then I knew not how to thank him; but he said that Etheldreda and Odda, Heregar and the Lady Alswythe, and maybe Guthrum also, as Thora's guardian, were to be thanked as well. "You have found many friends here in England already, Ranald my cousin," Alfred said.
"Well!" ejaculated the captain as he whipped up pony, "well, I should never have believed it!" "Believed what, Mr. Gordon?" I asked. "Why, that such a sweet young girl as that was the daughter of that villainous Carver Kinlay." "Ay! Thora's a bonnie lassie," I observed, with more feeling than I meant the words to convey; "and she's as good as bonnie."
The sight of that dark water gliding smoothly to the edge of rock, and there tumbling over into greater depths, seemed to tell me only too plainly what Thora's fate had been. I now began to despair of being able to escape into the outer air before the night came on; the changing hues of the stream of light that entered the cave already indicated the setting of the sun.
Steadily the preparations for Thora's marriage went on, but the spirit that animated their first beginnings had cooled down into that calm necessity, which always has to attend to all "finishings off." Early in December, Thora's future home was quite finished, and this last word expresses its beauty and completeness.
Then she raised her eyes to me again and said softly oh, so softly: "I'm real glad, Halcro, that ye werena drowned when the Curlew was wrecked." I was about to thank her for the part she had taken in my rescue when Captain Gordon interrupted. Said he: "If that sinner, Carver Kinlay, had had his own way Halcro would have been drowned like the rest." Thora's cheeks grew crimson.
The rich ivory satin was perfect and peerless in its exquisite fit and simplicity; jewels, nor yet lace, could have added nothing to it. Sunna had brought it with her own toilet. In fact, she was ready to make a special sensation with it on the first of January, for her wedding garment as Thora's bridesmaid was nothing less than a robe of gold and white shot silk, worn over a hoop.
Now Ragnor knew that this marriage procession, as a national custom, was passing away, but it had added its friendliness to his own and all his sons' and daughters' weddings and he wanted Thora's marriage ceremonial to include it. "When thou art an old woman, Thora," he said to her, "then thou wilt be glad to have remembered it." At length the New Year dawned and the day arrived.
"He says that he swore to keep the peace with Alfred, and he will do it. He and the Lady Thora will go with us. There are one or two also of the other hostages who blame him for returning. He cannot stay among the Danes here." Then I was very glad, and we made haste to have all ready for Thora's comfort on the ride that might be so long.
