Mr. Taft resigned the governorship of the Philippines to become secretary of war, his resignation taking effect January 31, 1904. He had performed a monumental work for the Filipinos, and for humanity at large, during his years of service in the islands, and carried with him the good will of most of the people whom he had so faithfully, efficiently and self-sacrificingly served.

But it was never easy for Roosevelt to wait. It was the hardest thing in the world for him to decline an invitation to enter a fight when the cause was a righteous one. So the year 1911 passed by, with the Taft Administration steadily losing prestige, and the revolt of the Progressives within the Republican party continually gathering momentum. Then came 1912, the year of the Glorious Failure.

Joe Wegg, Arthur Weldon, Cox the detective, Lon Taft, Nick Thome and even little Skim Clark were all in the melee, fighting desperately for time to enable Thursday Smith to work his press, using whatever cudgels they had been able to pick up to keep the assailants from the pole.

I heard afterward that the Sultan remarked that we were the only visitors since the Taft party who really appreciated his importance.

It was provided that we should continue and perfect the work of organizing and establishing civil governments already commenced by the military authorities. In doing this we were to act as a board of which Mr. Taft was designated president.

Taft, but we jes' wish you wouldn't insinuate that them oysters is yours an' that we're thieves an' robbers till you can prove the goods." "I know they're mine; I'd stake my life on it!" Mr. Taft snorted. "Prove it," challenged the tall man, who we afterward learned was known as "The Porpoise" because of his wonderful swimming abilities. Mr. Taft shrugged his shoulders helplessly.

This business being accomplished, he found Lon Taft at the hotel and instructed the carpenter to put rows of windows on both sides of the shed and to build partitions for an editorial office and a business office at the front. This was the beginning of a busy period, especially for poor Uncle John, who had many details to attend to personally.
