"Nonsense!" exclaimed the little man, growing angry. "I tell you this is valuable property. D'ye know who I am?" "Or ye might climb into the boot along vith it, sir " "Do you know who I am?" "All aboard all aboard for London!" roared the guard, coming up at the instant. "Valter!" cried Mottle-face. "Ay, ay, Joe?" "Gentleman's walise for the boot, Valter; and sharp's the vord!"

I am inclined to think it means both; but, if so, the "must not" would refer to the purely personal mystification on which, of course, none would desire to intrude, and the "cannot" would refer to that psychological mystery which we are at liberty to investigate. William Sharp's explanation to myself as I believe to others of his friends was to the same tenor as this posthumous statement.

Culpepper, hurriedly. "Wonderful, you have." Mr. Sharp's countenance cleared a little. "Let's make a night of it," he said. "Don't move, whatever you do." He closed the door and, putting the wine and a couple of glasses on the mantelpiece, took a chair by Mr. Culpepper and prepared to spend the evening.

Russell's account of Sharp's murder, Kirkton, p. 442. See also Creichton's Memoirs, though the captain was not present at the fight, having remained in garrison at Glasgow. In a Latin poem, "Bellum Bothuellianum," by Andrew Guild, now in the Advocates' Library at Edinburgh, are the following lines: "Tum rabiosa cohors, misereri nescia, stratos Invadit, laceratque viros: hic signifer, eheu!

The act was so brusque and unlike Mr Sharp's naturally polite character that John knew at once, as he said, that "something was up," and looked earnestly along the platform, where he saw Thomson himself walking smartly about as if in search of some one. He carried a heavy-headed stick in his hand and looked excited; but not much more so than an anxious or late passenger might be.

The strongest I have ever felt about a woman in my life . When I was settled in the chair again things seemed to become blank for a minute and then I heard Miss Sharp's voice with a tone could it be of anxiety? in it? saying "Drink this brandy, please." She must have gone to the dining-room and fetched the decanter and glass from the case, and poured it out while I was not noticing events.

"Yes, sir," said Rosa; "but as you are the only bidder, and you have been so kind to me, I would not think of opposing you." The words were scarcely out of her mouth, when they were greeted with a roar of Homeric laughter that literally shook the room, and this time not at the expense of the innocent speaker. "That's into your mutton, governor." "Sharp's the word this time."

On the night of Bob Sharp's return, which was the night last described in previous chapters, Sam went to the town, as we know, accompanied by Tom, who sailed the boat. As soon as he was fairly out of sight Jake walked away toward Pensacola.

Sharp's bare mention of peace in Paris caused the French censor to forbid the transmission of a harmless interview; and our insistence on the Declaration left, for the time being at least, a distinct distrust of our judgment and perhaps even of our good-will. It was suspected I am sure that the German influence in Washington had unwittingly got influence over the Department.

Never was there a man who was more frequently called on to belie his true character. It was a part of Mr Sharp's duty to look lazy at times, and even stupid, so as to throw suspicious men off their guard.
