The eleventh chapter of the Principe gives a short sketch of the growth of the temporal power, so framed as to be acceptable to the Medici, but steeped in the most acid irony. See, in particular, the sentence 'Costoro solo hanno stati e non li difendono, hanno sudditi e non li governano, etc. See the dispatch quoted by Gregorovius, Stadt Rom, vol. vii. p. 7, note. Op. Ined. Ricordi No. 28.

Her eyes were grave and brooding, as though some prescience of evil weighed upon her. Errington lifted his glass, smiling. "Far be the day," he said lightly. But her eyes, meeting his, were still clouded with foreboding. This song, "The Haven of Memory," has been set to music by Isador Epstein: published by G. Ricordi & Co., 265 Regent Street, W.

Thence he had his friend transported on the backs of men to Serravezza, and after his recovery sent him to pick up strength in his native city of Pistoja. In one of the Ricordi he reckons the cost of all this at 33-1/2 ducats.

Cf.

Guicciardini, writing his Ricordi during the first months of the siege, remarks upon the power of faith (Op. Ined. vol. i. p. 83.

Both refer to a small office which had been awarded to Michelangelo with the right to dispose of the patronage. He offered it to his favourite brother, Buonarroto, who does not seem to have thought it worth accepting. The documents for 1528 are almost as meagre. We do not possess a single letter, and the most important Ricordi relate to Buonarroto's death and the administration of his property.

The wisdom of Guicciardini nowhere appears more ripe, or his intellect more elastic, than in the Istoria Fiorentina. Students who desire to gain a still closer insight into the working of Guicciardini's mind should consult the 403 Ricordi Politici e Civili collected in the first volume of his Opere Inedite.

Likewise, as regards the library. Wherefore we recommend both to thy diligence. Fear not that either work to do or rewards shall fail thee while we live. Farewell, with the blessing of God and ours. Michelangelo began the library in 1526, as appears from his Ricordi. Still the work went on slowly, not through his negligence, but, as we have seen, from the Pope's preoccupation with graver matters.
