See Istoria Bresciana. Muratori, xxi. 865. It did not always need the interposition of a friar to arouse a strong religious panic in Italian cities. After an unusually fierce bout of discord the burghers themselves would often attempt to give the sanction of solemn rites and vows before the altar to their temporary truces.

The famous Istoria d' Italia was the work of one year of this enforced retirement. The question irresistibly rises to our mind, whether some of the severe criticisms passed upon the Medici in his unpublished compositions were the fruit of these same bitter leisure hours. Guicciardini died in 1540 at the age of fifty-eight, without male heirs. See the 'Apologia de' Cappucci, Arch.

Yet in these writings we find Guicciardini at his best. Here he has not yet assumed the mantle of the rhetorician, which in the Istoria d' Italia sits upon him somewhat cumbrously. His style is more spontaneous; his utterances are less guarded. Writing for himself alone, he dares to say more plainly what he thinks and feels.

Galileo likewise discovered on the sun's disc faculæ, or luculi, as they were called, which differ in no respect from the common ones but in their being brighter than the rest of the sun's surface. The original of this letter is in the British Museum. See Istoria e Dimonstrazioni, intorno alle macchie solare. Roma, 1616. See Opere di Galileo, vol, v., p. 131-293.

He tells us that, whilst at Pisa, Cesare had occasion to make an appeal to Piero de'Medici in the matter of a criminal case connected with one of his familiars; that he went to Florence and waited several hours in vain for an audience, whereafter he returned to Pisa "accounting himself despised and not a little injured." 1 Istoria d'Italia, tom.

Perkins, following the suggestion of Panza, in his Istoria dell' Antica Republica d'Amalfi, is inclined to think that this head represents, not Sigelgaita, but Joanna II. of Naples, and is therefore more than a century later in date than the pulpit. See Italian Sculptors, p. 51. Michael Angelo's Sonnets

See Perkins's Italian Sculptors, pp. 46, 47. Istoria della Vita e Fatti dell' eccellentissimo Capitano di guerra Bartolommeo Colleoni, scritta per Pietro Spino. Republished, 1859. In other words it relates the vicissitudes of the Republic under the Medici, and the administration of the Gonfalonier Soderini. This masterpiece of historical narration sets forth with brevity and frankness the whole series of events which are rhetorically and cautiously unfolded in the Istoria d' Italia.

1 Istoria d'Italia. Now, bastards were by canon law excluded from the purple, and it is probably upon this circumstance that both Infessura and Guicciardini have built the assumption that some such means as these had been adopted to circumvent the law, and as so often happens in chronicles concerning the Borgias the assumption is straightway stated as a fact.

* An interesting account of these negotiations, and a most curious picture of the Orthodox ecciestiastical world in Constantinople, is given by Subbotiny, "Istoria Belokrinitskoi Ierarkhii," Moscow, 1874.
