"We alone, or with the princess?" asked Stephano. "My wife will naturally accompany me," said Orloff, with a derisive smile. "Will she consent to leave Rome?" asked Joseph Ribas. "I shall request her to do so," proudly replied Orloff, "and I think my request will be a command to her." And the proud count was not mistaken. His request was a command for her.
With only one-third this number of men, Ribas encountered and destroyed the enemy on the plains of Los Horcones, which victory, together with that at Niquitao, did much for the success of the whole campaign. Leaving a detachment in Barinas, Bolivar advanced to San Carlos, which he entered on the 28th of July, and then continued onward towards Valencia.
Rushing upon the stranger, and grasping him with gigantic strength, he thrust him down from the bed. Joseph Ribas turned toward his new and unexpected enemy. The lamp lighted his face, and falling back Carlo shrieked, "My brother!" Joseph Ribas broke out into a loud, savage laugh. "At length we meet, my brother," said he. "But this time you shall not hinder me in my work.
On that occasion, he uttered one of those brilliant expressions so common in his writings: "Ribas, against whom adversity is powerless." ... He never felt that his own glory had to suffer from the unstinted praise he bestowed on his followers.
Before him stood Joseph Ribas, laughingly relating in his own comic manner the occurrences of the preceding night. "You are a wonderful man," said Orloff, when Joseph had finished. "You have honestly earned your epaulets, and to-day you will for the first time appear at my dinner-table as a Russian officer. Ah, I prophesy a great future for you.
Ha, you ragamuffins, you hounds, bring me my oriental costume, the richest, handsomest; hasten, or I will throttle you!" And Count Orloff hurried into his toilet-chamber, to the trembling slaves who there awaited him. With a sly smile Joseph Ribas returned to the villa. As he had previously said, he found Natalie dreaming in the garden, the guitar upon her arm.
He did not tremble long, it was soon finished. "My little opening murder has, indeed, less significance," sighed Joseph Ribas. "What was it but to help a humble musician to the blessedness and harmony of the spheres!" "But that musician was your brother!" Ribas shrugged his shoulders. "That is, he was so considered; but in reality I believe he was only a half-brother.
"I have sworn to defend them with my life!" she exclaims aloud. "Paulo, Paulo, I will keep my word!" And with the boldness of a lioness she defends herself against her executioners. "Leave her those papers!" commanded Joseph Ribas who was present by order of the empress. "She may keep them now they will directly be ours!" "Oh, Paulo, I have kept the promise I made thee!" murmured Natalie.
Bolivar ordered Ribas, who was at that time in Caracas, to come to the rescue with all the men he could gather. The commander of Puerto Cabello, Salomon, advancing on the road which leads from Valencia to Caracas, was attacked by Ribas and by Bolivar and, after three days of constant fighting, was forced to withdraw to the port, having suffered very heavy losses.
Bolivar and Ribas returned to Caracas, still on the endless quest for more resources with which to fight.
