The publication, in 1847, of "Evangeline" raised him to the zenith of his reputation. His subsequent work confirmed him in popular estimation as the greatest of American poets "Hiawatha," "The Courtship of Miles Standish," and such shorter poems as "Resignation," "The Children's Hour," "Paul Revere's Ride," and "The Old Clock on the Stairs." But, after all, Longfellow was not a really great poet.
"Memorial History of Boston," iii, 15. Frothingham's "Warren," 467. Revere's narrative. Frothingham's "Siege," 95. "Familiar Letters of John and Abigail Adams," 54. Lieutenant Barker makes a suggestion that must have been popular among the officers. "I wonder the G l will allow any of their people to quit the Town till they return the Prisoners; one wou'd think he might get 'em if he'd try."
"It is a wonderful gift," said Lincoln, as he listened to it, his eyes filled with tears, "to be able to stir men like that." "The Skeleton in Armor," "A Ballad of the French Fleet," "Paul Revere's Ride," "The Wreck of the Hesperus," are ballads that stir men still.
Some of the more resourceful wits in khaki even parodied the famous poem for his benefit, but he didn't care. He would have matched Uncle Sam against Paul Revere's gallant steed any day, and they could jolly him and "kid" him as their mood prompted, but woe be to the person who touched his faithful machine save in his watchful presence.
This "something" was either one or both of two objectives: the stores at Concord, and the persons of Adams and Hancock, then known to be staying at the house of the Reverend Jonas Clark in Lexington. That this latter objective was seriously considered, at least by the Americans, we shall see from Revere's narrative. There never has been proof that Gage endeavored to seize either them or Warren.
It is to be found in several books, notably Goff's "Life of Revere." Most of these facts are from Frothingham's "Siege," 57-59, and from Revere's letter. John Hancock never showed better in his life than on the morning of the 19th of April. Many times the Tories had tried to win him over. Hutchinson himself had written: "At present, Hancock and Adams are at variance.
He knew most of the stories by heart, corrected Miss Higginson if she left out or added anything in the telling, and always joined in when she ended the entertainment with her two stock pieces "Barbara Freitchie" and "Paul Revere's Ride," which were great favorites with him.
As Revere drew near, they pushed out into the moonlight, and he saw their uniforms. One of them blocked the road, the other tried to take him, and Revere, turning back, galloped first for Charlestown and then "pushed for the Medford road." Revere made the turn successfully; the officer who followed, ignorant of the locality, mired himself in a clay pond. Revere's road was now clear.
"Let us go to him," Cary exclaimed presently, rising, with his arm still about her. There were two wax candles burning in their sconces that had been made over forty years ago in Paul Revere's foundry. By the softened light Cary glanced at the flushed face, downcast eyes and dewy, tremulous lips. Half the sweet story was still untold, but there would be years and years.
Will you ride my horse?" "My Own will serve me better; suspicions might be aroused if I should be seen on yours." "Very true; I had not thought of that. You are to make all speed, and go direct to Master Revere's. Say to him that George Messerve, who has been appointed distributor of the tax stamps for New Hampshire, will arrive in Boston shortly, if, indeed, he is not already there.
