Lord Raglan laughed heartily, and translated his stout-hearted lieutenant's language literally for Canrobert. "Ah! what a brave man!" cried the French general, lighting up. "A splendid general, a most valiant man." "You see now, general; one more effort and the day is ours. Won't you help?" "But, my lord, what can I do? The Russians are all round us still, and in great strength.

When the hour arrived, he entered leaning on the arm of Dr. Bayly. Dorothy followed with the ladies of the family. Young Delaware was in his place, and 'with organ voice and voice of psalms, praise and prayer arose for the last time from the house of Raglan. All were in tears save the marquis. A smile played about his lips, and he looked like a child giving away his toy.

"You can hardly understand, Miss Raglan. Fact is, it was one of those deals when you can make a million, in a straight enough game; but it comes out of another man one, maybe, that you don't know; who is playing just the same as you are. I have had a lot of sport; but I've never crippled any one man, when my engine has been dead on him. I have played more against organisations than single men."

We have Aberdeen, deficient in mental clearness and propelling force, by his horror of war bringing war to pass; Gladstone, of too subtle intellect and too lively conscience, "a good man in the worst sense of the term"; Palmerston, above both in keenness of instinct and in strength of will, meaning war from the first, and biding his time to insure it; Newcastle, sanguine to the verge of rashness, loyally adherent to Lord Raglan while governed by his own judgment, distrustful under stress of popular clamour; Panmure, ungenerous, rough-tongued, violent, churlish, yet not malevolent "a rhinoceros rather than a tiger" hurried by subservience to the newspaper Press into injustice which he afterwards recognized, yet did but sullenly repair.

I have already mentioned that one peculiarity of Raglan was a distinct moat surrounding its keep. Immediately from the outer end of the archway, a Gothic bridge of stone led across this thirty-foot moat to a narrow walk which encompassed the tower. The walk was itself encompassed and divided from the moat by a wall with six turrets at equal distances, surmounted by battlements.

Thanks to the care bestowed upon them, the regiment kept up its numbers in a marvellous way it even returned more men for duty than corps which had just arrived, and the difference between it and others in the camp-grounds close by was so marked that Lord Raglan came over and complimented Blythe upon the condition of his command.

'I trust you will be more pitiful to my poor Lady, said Richard, quietly. 'If all they say be true, Raglan stables are no place for a mare of her breeding. 'What do you mean, roundhead? 'Folk say your stables at Raglan are like other some Raglan matters of the infernal sort. Scudamore was silent for a moment.

At this moment an aide-de-camp ventured to ride forward to his general's side, and said "Do you hear that firing, my lord? I think the French on the right are warmly engaged." "Are they?" replied Lord Raglan, doubtfully; "I can't catch any return fire." "In any case," observed St. Arnaud, quickly, "it is time to lend him a hand. The Prince Napoleon and Canrobert shall now advance."

'Alas, Dorothy! answered Richard, 'there is no help: I must take thee to Raglan. But comfort thyself soon shalt thou go where thou wilt. Dorothy marvelled at her own resignation the while she rode with Richard back to the castle. Her scheme was a failure, but through no fault, and she could bear anything with composure except blame. A word from Richard to colonel Morgan was sufficient.

I sent him there, and I hope he'll stay. If he doesn't, his salary stops: he is shiftless too. That is not the kind of thing, and they are not the kind of people you know best, Miss Raglan." He looked at her, eyes full-front, bravely, honestly, ready to face the worst. Her head was turned away. He nodded to himself. It was as he feared.
