God grant its directing minds corresponding energy and wisdom. Red Tape and the Soldier's Widow Pigeon-holing at Head-Quarters and Weeping at the Family Fireside A Pigeon-hole General Outwitted Fishing for a Discharge The Little Irish Corporal on Topographical Engineers Guard Duty over a Whiskey Barrel. , Penna., Nov. , 1862.
The festival was in honour of our Lady of Conception; and, when the people learnt that Penna had on board an image of the saint handsomer than their own, they put off in their canoes to borrow it; Marcellino taking charge of the doll, covering it carefully with a neatly-bordered white towel.
The Penna de la Vernia rises very steeply from the rolling ground below, and towers above the traveller with its pyramidal point in very suggestive fashion. The well-wooded sides of the conical hill are diversified by emergent rocks, and the plume of trees on the summit seems to suggest a Latin rather than a Celtic significance for the "Penna."
I have so high a veneration, or rather idolatrization, for the clerical character, that even a little futurum esse priestling, with his penna pennae, throws an awe over my mind in his presence, and shortens my sentences into single ideas. Farewell, and believe me to be ever, my dear Sir, yours, LVIII. To MR. ROBERT MUIR, KILMARNOCK. STIRLING, 26th August 1787.
"Meet me at the Penna depot, Jersey City, at nine to-night. Alice." This message, of course, drove all other thoughts from his mind. He had no time even to tell Oliver about it he had to jump into an automobile and rush to catch the next train for the city. And all through the long, cold ride in ferry-boats and cabs he pondered this mystery.
Anastasius, Bishop of Civita di Penna, gave him another, with great marks of regard, after having gone out to meet him, on an inspiration he had in his sleep that Francis would come the next day to his town, a circumstance which is recorded by a painting in the church, and is explained in two Latin verses.
Penna was inexorable; he ordered the crew to weigh anchor, and the disappointed savages remained hooting after us with all their might from the top of the bank as we glided away. The Muras have a bad reputation all over this part of the Amazons, the semi-civilised Indians being quite as severe upon them as the white settlers. Everyone spoke of them as lazy, thievish, untrustworthy, and cruel.
Liberal owners of river craft allow a cup of coffee sweetened with molasses, or a ration of cashaca, to each man of their crews; Penna gave them coffee. When all were served, the day's work began. There was seldom any wind at this early hour, so if there was still water along the shore, the men rowed, if not, there was no way of progressing but by espia.
In vain did Simonetto, warned by sinister presentiment, entreat his uncle on his knees to allow him to put Penna to death: Guido refused. The plot ripened suddenly on the occasion of the marriage of Astorre with Lavinia Colonna, at Midsummer, 1500. The festival began and lasted several days amid gloomy forebodings, whose deepening effect is admirably described by Matarazzo.
Colls., V., 422; Id., V., 425. In 1731 M. La Ronde, having constructed at his own expense a bark of forty tons on Lake Superior, received the post of La Pointe de Chagouamigon as a gratuity to defray his expenses.
