You must have been talking with someone or reading some outré book of late. I wish you wouldn't. You are too young and too good looking to entertain any such ideas. Why, you can have nearly any young man you wish. Surely you can find someone with whom you can live happily or with whom you would be willing to try. It's time enough to think about the other things when you've tried and failed.
These fellows are always doing the most out-of-the-way things in what they call an orderly manner. Now here, I conceive, is a positive paradox. True method appertains to the ordinary and the obvious alone, and cannot be applied to the outre. What definite idea can a body attach to such expressions as "methodical Jack o' Dandy," or "a systematical Will o' the Wisp"?
In France, he is laughed at as a boaster, but not trusted as a warrior. In Spain, he is neither dreaded nor esteemed, neither laughed at nor courted; he is there universally despised. He studies to be thought a gentleman; but the native porter breaks through the veil of a ridiculously affected and outre politeness.
And then, aloud: "Here's Oliver! It was awfully good of you to come. Good-night!" And as, on Oliver's arm, she left their little refuge, she looked back. He lingered to watch her through this one dance. How they made all the other couples sink into insignificance, with that something in them both that was better than mere good looks that something not outre or eccentric, but poignant, wayward.
The physician himself was no great clerk, and he read the paper slowly, stumbling over the words, as it were, while Brother Thomas, clasping his crucifix to his breast, listened in triumph as he heard what he himself had bidden me write. "I, Norman Leslie, of of Peet What name is this? Peet I cannot utter it." "Passez outre," quoth D'Aulon.
"I think," she said significantly, "what I have learned is quite sufficient. If the occupations you have told me about are so disreputable what were those you have kept so carefully concealed? For example, where were you and what were you doing four five six years ago? You have already refused to answer. You relate only a few inconsequential and outré trifles. To cover up What?
Outre ces crystallisations silicieuses, il y en a, quoique rarement, de quartzeuses, qui ou forment de petites veines de crystal, ou bien des groupes de crystaux quartzeux, ou qui enfin, enduisent les mamelons de silex." Our author then makes a specification of the different varieties; after which he continues, p. 69.
She doesn't come here often, and when she does, I am always in a fidget, for fear some of the city girls will call, and she'll do something outré." "I guess, then, I won't go down, at least not till I'm dressed," answered Miss Porter; and Ella, throwing on a dressing-gown, descended to the parlor, where she met her sister with the ends of her fingers, and a simple, "Ah, Mary, how d'ye do?
But to fall in love, if indeed it were so, with a man who not only had ideas, but an inclination to live up to them, and on them, and on nothing else, seemed to Lord Dennis 'outre'. She had followed him to the wall, and he looked at her dubiously. "To rest in the waters of Lethe, Babs? By the way, seen anything of our friend Mr. Courtier? Very picturesque that Quixotic theory of life!"
Handsome book-cases, burdened with precious lore, lined the walls of the rear room; and on either side of a massive ormolu escritoire, bronze candelabra shed light on the blue velvet desk where lay delicate sheets of gossamer paper with varied and outré monograms, guarded by an exquisite marble statuette of Harpocrates, which stood in the mirror-panelled recess reserved for pen, ink, and sealing-wax.
