Look at your own grandfather, dear Mrs. Potiphar, fine old gentleman, I am told, rather kept in what the artists call the middle-distance, at present, a capital shoemaker, who did his work well Alexander and John Howard did no more: well here you are, you see, with liveries and a pew in the right church, and altogether a front seat in the universe merry-go-round, you know; here we go up, up, up; here we go down, down, down, etc.
Carol's head ached as she trailed behind the unsmiling Calibrees along the block of booths. She chirruped at Kennicott, "Let's be wild! Let's ride on the merry-go-round and grab a gold ring!" Kennicott considered it, and mumbled to Calibree, "Think you folks would like to stop and try a ride on the merry-go-round?"
"What's all this, Mother?" asked Mr. Bobbsey, who, with his coat off and his sleeves rolled up, was working hard to help the ladies at the Sunday school picnic. "What's all this about a merry-go-round coming here?" "I don't know that it is coming here," answered Mrs. Bobbsey, with a smile. "But some sort of affair is thundering along the road. You can see the crowd of children near it.
"I have some pride, but thought to ride, In the merry-go-round, above the ground." Then the Seventeen Little Bears all turned somersaults at once, and Susan cried, "Stop them, stop them, or they will break their little bones." Then the most surprising thing happened! The Seventeen Little Bears made a low bow and said, "In the merry-go-round we'll go, Laughing gayly, ha, ha, ho, ho!"
It was this that seemed to be causing the trouble which the red-faced man and the lanky boy were trying to make better. Behind the engine truck, which was in the lead, were three other trucks, and the drivers of the horses kept to their seats, not offering to help the red-faced man. The three trucks were piled high with the frame and roof of the merry-go-round.
We left Merry-go-round Island revolving gracefully upon a tiny reef whence it was borne by the rising tide. We are now to take up our narrative at the point where the island ceased spinning and was carried slowly on upstream by the incoming waters.
It was very delightful to sit there in the crisp October air, with the brook seemingly humming tender legends of the woods, which witless men could not translate, with an uncertain breeze playing through the newly fallen maple-leaves, now turning them one by one in lazy curiosity, then of a sudden making them caper and swirl in a scarlet merry-go-round.
Bunny said, "I will give you a warm seat by the fire, sir." Susan said, "I will give you a basket of cookies." The Seventeen Little Bears said, "We will give you seventeen pieces of peppermint candy." "Help, help, help!" they all cried, "Do stop the merry-go-round!" Bushy-Tail looked as saucy as you please. "I can ride faster than this," he said, "I was brought up in a merry-go-round.
The children build little houses for their dolls and name them “camps.” Boys take their bows and arrows and go into the bushes and kill small birds, and on returning say they have been “turkey-hunting.” Children sit around a small piece of land and, sticking blades of grass into the ground, name it a “corn field.” They have the game of “hide and seek.” They use the dancing rope, manufacture a “see-saw,” play “leap frog,” and build a “merry-go-round.” Carrying a small stick, they say they carry a rifle.
The smaller twins were talking about the merry-go-round and starting over again the dispute as to who should ride on the wooden lion. "Are you sure you left your coat hanging on the tree limb?" asked Mrs. Bobbsey. "I'm certain of it," her husband answered. "And this old coat never was mine I wouldn't own it!" He dropped to the ground the ragged garment that had been found lying beneath the tree.
