The Orders are again divided into Genera, or Families, which are all natural associations, and are described from the general resemblances of the parts of fructification, in respect to their number, form, situation, and reciprocal proportion. These are the Calyx, or Flower-cup, as seen in No. iv. No. x. No. xiv. Second, the Corol, or Blossom, as seen in No. i. ii. &c.
So they had to stay out of doors in the rain, and they grew wetter and wetter. By and by they flew to the red and yellow striped tulip, and said: "Friend Tulip, will you open your flower-cup and let us in till the storm is over?" The tulip answered: "The red and yellow butterflies may enter, because they are like me, but the white one may not come in."
Just whereabouts in the flower-cup, and just how the bee finds this honey, how it carries it home, where and how and why it stores it in the hive, is one of the most fascinating of stories, as good as a fairy tale. In connection with this comes very naturally the story of the bees and the pollen.
The sun is now rising high above the pine-trees, the morning mist is also rising and rolling off like a golden veil as it catches those glorious rays the whole earth seems wakening into new life the dew has brightened every leaf and washed each tiny flower-cup the pines and balsams give out their resinous fragrance the aspens flutter and dance in the morning breeze and return a mimic shower of dew-drops to the stream the shores become lower and flatter the trees less lofty and more mossy the stream expands and wide beds of rushes spread out on either side what beds of snowy water-lilies how splendid the rose tint of those perseicarias that glow so brightly in the morning sun the rushes look like a green meadow, but the treacherous water lies deep below their grassy leaves the deer delights in these verdant aquatic fields, and see what flocks of red-wings rise from among them as the canoe passes near their bright shoulder-knots glance like flashes of lightning in the sun-beams.
One looks in one's glass, after all!" She launched the closing words at him on a cry that lifted them above the petulance of vanity; but his sense of her words was lost in the surprise of her face. Under the flying clouds of her excitement it was no longer a shallow flower-cup but a darkening gleaming mirror that might give back strange depths of feeling.
Flowers on the top of the stem, three or four opening together, each being 3 in. long and wide; the tube short and scaly, with overlapping sepals and saw-edged petals, which are white, slightly tinged with rose. Stamens filling the whole of the flower-cup, bright yellow. A native of Mexico, introduced in 1796, flowering in summer.
The thirsty sun had by this time drained almost every flower-cup of its dew; but the freshness of the morning still lingered in the hollows of the rocks, and in the shade of the chestnut, the walnut, and elm. As the earth warmed, it became quieter.
The wood-tick's drum convokes the elves at the noon of night on Cro' Nest top, and, clambering out of their flower-cup beds and hammocks of cobweb, they fly to the meeting, not to freak about the grass or banquet at the mushroom table, but to hear sentence passed on the fay who, forgetting his vestal vow, has loved an earthly maid.
No bumblebee, dipping into a flower-cup, ever sipped and twinkled more rapturously than they. When the last drop was eaten, they made ready to go. Each in turn kissed Toinette's hand, and said a word of farewell. Thistle brushed his feathered cap over the doorpost as he passed. "Be lucky, house," he said, "for you have received and entertained the luck-bringers. And be lucky, Toinette.
No, that glorious flower-cup, single in its beauty, intoxicating in its fragrance, shall not be dragged through the vulgarities of life! it is yours yours, before any eye has blighted it, yours forever! Yes, my poet, to you belong my thoughts, all, those that are secret, those that are gayest; my heart is yours without reserve and with its infinite affection.
