"Never mind," sez Albert Edard, "I'm glad to see you, Mister Ward, at all events," & he tuk my hand so plesunt like & larfed so sweet that I fell in love with him to onct. He handid me a segar & we sot down on the Pizarro & commenst smokin rite cheerful. "Wall," sez I, "Albert Edard, how's the old folks?" "Her Majesty & the Prince are well," he sed. "Duz the old man take his Lager beer reglar?"
They go, in the fastest time anybody can make till they go on the lightnin', a way in which they will go before long, I think, and Josiah duz too. "They said there wuzn't nothin' like it. And I said, "Like as not." I believed 'em.
"Brer Rabbit, he sot down sorter keerless like, en begin fer ter scratch one year like a man studyin' 'bout sump'n. "'Dat's so, Brer Fox, sezee, 'you duz look sorter stove up. Look like sump'n bin onkoamin' yo' ha'rs, sezee. "Brer Fox ain't sayin' nothin', but Brer Rabbit, he keep on talkin': "'Dey ain't no bad feelin's 'twix' us, is dey, Brer Fox?
"Duz his Excellency run yer jobs fer yer ter hum? Guess yer ain't so fat, be yer, that yer keant carry that inter the settin'-room yerself." With a glance of outraged dignity that should have annihilated the publican, the man went across the hall, and after a knock, entered. "Why, Billy!" exclaimed Janice, starting up from her chair, her arm outstretched.
"But, s'posin' the dogs might come?" said Dumps. "Well, honey, dey ain't come yit; an' wen dey duz come, den hit'll be time fur ter tell yer pa." "Anyhow, we'll bring you something to eat," said Diddie, "and try and help you all we can; but we must go back now, befo' Mammy hunts for us; so good-bye;" and again they left him to himself.
"Yes, and you'll see four mules, a span of horses, two buggies, a double sleigh, and three buffalo robes. He's drinked 'em all up, and two horse rakes, a cultivator, and a thrashin' machine." "Why-ee!" sez I agin. "And where are the children?" "The boys have inherited their father's habits and drink as bad as he duz and the oldest girl has gone to the bad."
Tirzah Ann and Whitfield wuzn't quite ready to go when we did, but they wuz a-comin' later, when Tirzah Ann had got all her preperations made her own dresses done, and Whitfield's night-shirts embroidered, and her stockin's knit. I love Tirzah Ann. But I can't help seein' that she duz lots of things that hain't neccessary.
Potiphar, doin' dretful well, it wuz spozed by her folks, but he wuz plenty good enough for her, I think, and so Josiah duz. And right in this neighborhood Alexander the Great marched round and camped on his way to Memphis. So you can see it wuz interestin' in a good many ways. But the Virgin's Tree wuz what we wanted to see.
So the sailors drank the wine of their native land, and soon their thoughts were back in fair Belzoond and the little neighbouring cities of Durl and Duz. But for me the captain poured into a little glass some heavy yellow wine from a small jar which he kept apart among his sacred things.
The costumes of the Japanese look dretful curious to us; their loose gay-colored robes and turbans, and sandals, etc., look jest as strange as Josiah's pantaloons and hat, and my bask waist duz to them, I spoze. They're a pleasant little brown people, always polite that is learnt 'em as regular as any other lesson.
