I can understand that difference of opinion can make dog-fighting. But what gets me is how difference of opinion regarding the relative fighting merits of a bull-dog and a wolf-dog makes me a nature-faker and President Roosevelt a vindicated and triumphant scientist. Then entered John Burroughs to clinch President Roosevelt's judgments. In this alliance there is no difference of opinion.
I went with some friends to the bear-garden, where was cock-fighting, dog-fighting, bear and bull-baiting, it being a famous day for all these butcherly sports, or rather barbarous cruelties. The bulls did exceedingly well, but the Irish wolf-dog exceeded, which was a tall greyhound, a stately creature indeed, who beat a cruel mastiff.
"Surely," said I, "you are not hankering after dog-fighting again, a sport which none but the gross and unrefined care anything for? No, one's thoughts should be occupied by something higher and more rational than dog-fighting; and what better than love divine love? Oh, there's nothing like it!" "Pray, don't talk nonsense," said Francis Ardry.
When I talks of dog-fighting, I of course means rat-catching, and badger-baiting, ay, and bull-baiting too, just as when I speaks religiously, when I says one I means not one but three. And talking of religion puts me in mind that I have something else to do besides chaffing here, having a batch of dogs to send off by this night’s packet to the Pope of Rome.’
He had a passion for gambling, horse-racing, dog-fighting, and indulged in the churchly habit of doing that which he ought not and leaving undone that which he should have done. He was worse than that degenerate scion of a proud ancestry, who a-kneiping went with his lady friends in the Cincinnati fountain, after the opera, on a wager.
A time will come, and that speedily, when folks will give up everything else, and follow dog-fighting.’ ‘Do you think so?’ said I. ‘Think so? Let me ask what there is that a man wouldn’t give up for it?’ ‘Why,’ said I modestly, ‘there’s religion.’ ‘Religion! How you talk. Why, there’s myself, bred and born an Independent, and intended to be a preacher, didn’t I give up religion for dog-fighting?
McGee repeated. "Sure. That's a fine question to ask a pilot bound for Paris. We land at Le Bourget field, you know." "No, I didn't know." "Where'd you think you'd land in the Champs Elysees?" "I'm liable to land on a church steeple if that motor cuts out on me as it did yesterday afternoon for no reason at all. Remember, no contour chasing and no dog-fighting. We're going to Paris."
Scarcely knowing what to say, I made an observation at random. 'You show, by your own conduct, said I, 'that there are other things worth following besides dog-fighting. You practise rat-catching and badger- baiting as well. The dog-fancier eyed me with supreme contempt. 'Your friend here, said he, 'might well call you a new one.
Not that I care anything about the matter; I merely obey the will of my guardians; my thoughts are fixed on something better than politics.’ ‘I understand you,’ said I; ‘dog-fighting—well, I can easily conceive that to some minds dog-fighting—’ ‘I was not thinking of dog-fighting,’ said Francis Ardry, interrupting me. ‘Not thinking of dog-fighting!’ I ejaculated.
To weave your spell out of commonplace events and brew a love-potion from every-day materials is high art. When Kipling takes three average soldiers of the line, ignorant, lying, swearing, smoking, dog-fighting soldiers, who can even run on occasion, and by telling of them holds a world in thrall that's art!
