For a form of skin disease sulphur has been given by the teaspoonful by my brethren of the "regular" school; with equal faith, my brethren of the homoeopathic school will give the fraction of a grain whose denominator will cross an ordinary page: at which extreme is the science of dosage, if any; or where between?

One begins to perceive more and more distinctly that one is dealing with a sort of human mosaic; that each patch in that great place is of a different quality and colour from the next and never to be mixed with it. Most clubs have a common link, a lowest common denominator in the Club Bore, who spares no one, but even the National Liberal bores are specialised and sectional.

At any rate, there are no products of human thought and feeling capable of being expressed by form which do not find their common denominator in a linear drawing.

Their morality was easy, but difficult to understand; compounded of three-fourths sentiment nine-tenths selfishness, twelve-ninths instinct, self-devotion, metaphysics, and cant. 'Twas hard to come at a common denominator. John Bull, with his four rules of vulgar arithmetic, could never make it out; altogether he never could abide these foreign bores.

The fifteen shillings a week was a tight fit; but that was not my trouble. Reduce your denominator you know the quotation. I found it no philosophical cant, but a practical solution of life. My food cost me on the average a shilling a day. If more of us limited our commissariat bill to the same figure, there would be less dyspepsia abroad.

Now it is possible for a teacher to speak so as to be easily heard by three hundred persons, and three hundred pupils can be easily so seated as to see his illustrations or diagrams. Now suppose that three hundred pupils, all ignorant of the method of reducing fractions to a common denominator, and yet all old enough to learn, are collected in one room.

Some other element in objects might conceivably have served for a common denominator between them; but words, just by virtue of their adventitious, detachable status, and because they are so easily compared and manipulated in the world of sound, were singularly well fitted for this office.

We may be content if we can hit upon some least common denominator free from the controversies of metaphysics. If that is our object, Coleridge has given us too much. But he has also given us too little. What he does not sufficiently discuss is the imperfect artist the only artist that has yet been given to the world.

It is impossible to reduce these opposite theories to a common denominator. The Christians, the Hindoos, the Parsees, the Buddhists, and the Mohammedans have each their "Holy Bible" or "sacred book." Each religion claims that its own Bible is the direct revelation of God, and is the only true Bible teaching the only true faith. Each religion regards all the other religions as spurious.

"Well, I'll declare, so she is!" lifting her by the armpits for a kiss. "Well, well, well!" "Papa, I got ninety in arithmetic. I'd have got a hundred, but I got the wrong common denominator." "That's right, Lilly. Keep up well in your studies. Remember, knowledge is power." "Get your father's velveteen coat, Lilly." "Papa, Ella McBride kisses boys."
